Barker and Macklin are good contenders. Hopkins struggled with guys like Echols and Mercado. Can't "Roy Jones" every fighter you fight.

You can when you are an elite fighter.

There are truly not many elite fighters in any generation. If you called every fighter that was very good elite, then that list would be too long.

THU, Mayweather, Whitaker, Pacquiao, these are elite fighters. Mosely, Williams Trinidad, are not elite, Very good, though. There is a difference.

Only Jones and Whitaker really did that.

You can see the difference in skills between the two last weekends....Ward is way more skilled than Sergio IMHO......
But, Sergio has his own style and he is effective with it....the guy has a good jab, is fast (not as fast as some people like to say) has a decent inside game, good mobility.....but to call him one of the best MWs is way too much.....

Graziano would stop him in that last round if he was Jr.......but I´m sure Martinez would be much more alert if he was fighting a guy like Rocky....IMO he didn´t respect Jr and was caught during a moment of lack of attention...

If it was Graziano he was fighting Grazy wouldn't have seen the 12th.

He'd have given Marvin Hagler absolute fits.

If he'd not been badly hurt in the last round, yes.

As it is, a very good performance against one of the top rated contenders in his division. Nothing to scoff at.

They have a different skillset, not entirely analogous. Sergio's is very unorthodox and relies on his speed, reflexes and timing, sort of along the lines of RJJ, Jr. It's not a style a coach would teach his charge but one only a unique talent can exploit. But that said, I would not say Ward is way more skilled. He just displays very learned, orthodox skills. The idea that there is a single skillset that fits all fighters is ridiculous.

And Rocky wouldn't have made it anywhere near the 12th against Sergio. Chavez lost 35 or the 36 minutes of the fight, and lost them badly, to a guy with a broken hand. And he was CRUISERWEIGHT for this fight. Sergio's only mistake was going for the KO in the 12th with a broken hand and 11 rounds in the bank.

And showed he isn't capable of going for the K.O late against a man he thoroughly dominated for 31 minutes.

It was a stupid move. He had a broken hand.

Plus, the dude is 37. That age doesn't compliment his style. By the time he recovers from knee surgery and gets fit, he will be well over it. He's done.

i must have watched this martinez chavez fight more times than i want to say and one thing that ive realized is that it was another hopkins/trinidad up to that 12th round. take that one round away and we have everyone saying ATG and i know it because ive seen it done with hopkins who went from nobody to somebody and a top p4p fighter overnight, a few defense later and they start to say he's the greatest middleweight ever, even greater than monzon they started to say

i just dont think people understand the significance of that size difference i imagine this is what charley burley must have looked like when he fought light heavyweights and heavyweights as a skinny little middleweight. sergio should not have been in that ring that night and doing the things he was doing to chavez, yet there he was
