I am trying to trace back the lineage of the original eight weight classes. so who was the first gloved (Marquees of Queensbury) champion in each weight class ?
It depends on how you consider the changes in weight over the years. Cyberboxingzone has done a lineage but it's a bit shaky. Stonehands is doing one which I trust will bed pretty concrete. I'm not too bothered about lineage these days other an exercise in purity. If I remember rightly though it's: Sullivan Root N.P. Dempsey Duffy McAuliffe Torpedo Murphy Mcgovern Wilde I'm probably way off with a couple of those but I can't be arsed switching my computer on and checking my notes.
Wow, i honestly thought it would've been common knowledge and not a point of debate. very interesting, i would definitely agree with Sullivan, N.P Dempsey and McAuliffe and would probabely put Jimmy Barry in at flyweight ahead of Wilde, but i can see how folks could argue the other divisions
There are definitive fights that were the first championship bouts in each weight class, it's just that those weightclasses weren't what they are now. Some ceased to exist for periods of time also.
this is what my notes say HW: Sullivan LHW: Root MW: N.P. Dempsey WW: Duffy LW: McAuliffe FW: Torpedo Murphy BW: Barry (dixon did claim the championship a few years before him though) FlW: Wilde
