dyna, I agree with you 100%, and I have never read a more learned post as to why a prime Joe Louis would have kod any version of Clay/Ali... Today's younger posters cannot assess the tremendous awe that the boxing world had for the young Brown Bomber...Yes he could be outboxed by some guys for awhile, but it was akin to a victim escaping his executioner until the inevitable happened...My favorite description of Joe Louis's tremendous combo punching was "like a coil-spring unwinding ". I cannot see an Ali at his best,[Clay /Ali] avoiding the tremendously potent Joe Louis of the Max Baer fight for more than a few rounds, or for that matter a Billy Conn either ,who did so well against the Joe Louis of 1941, who was a little past his peak...Some posters say 'well Ali was bigger than Conn, and took a better punch".Maybe so, but as a Doctor who once aided a Louis ko victim revealed to the press, "the human body was not designed to withstand the devastating attack from a Joe Louis".. No way Ali could withstand the blurrung combos of a prime Joe Louis and remain upright...A Bob Pastor, or a Billy Conn had the style to frustrate Joe Louis for awhile, but look what Louis did to them in a return match... If a prime Joe Louis would ever lose a bout in his prime, it would be to a Dempsey or Tyson vicious early attack as both hit fast and hard...But not an Ali who had trouble with men smaller than himself...But there will never ever be another prime murderous hitter with the leverage like Joe Louis. Great piece dyna...:good:good:good
cooper very much did have the power of louis in that left hook. it was a bomb of a shot. true, he didn't have the finishing ability of louis. or the boxing skills. ali had great ability to recuperate after being hurt or put down. i'm sure he would of won had the knock down come earlier in the round. he would of used his legs until he got himself together again. schmeling who was past his prime when he beat up and stopped louis, was nowhere near the level of a prime ali.
He had a nice left hook, but not Louis' power. Considering Clay was looking really hurt when he got up and went to his corner, plus all the controversy about the smelling salts and the gloves, I'd say Cooper had a huge chance of knocking him out for good.
I pick Ali right now, but a point of interest is that Ali planned to get off his bike for Liston. That is, at that time, he didn't believe that he could stay on his bike for 15 rounds against Liston. If he was right, and I personally don't believe that any fighter could box against a world class pressure fighter [which Liston arguably wasn't] for 15 rounds without coming down off his bike; has it even been done? At any weight? Never mind HW? Anyway, I don't believe it could be done and that at some points - many points, and not just nearer the end of the fight - Ali has to come down and face what would be his ultimate nemesis flat-footed for spells. The fact that I pick Ali to win in spite of this rather than pick him to never have to do it makes him, by my calculations, higher in my estimation than even yours, but it's there. "You can put all the boxers you want in front of Joe Louis and he'll find all of them. You have to fight him." - Johnny Ray. That goes for Ali, too.
The only bad choice here is an emphatic choice either way. The two greatest heavyweights ever (Ruiz is only a close 3rd). However, I will say that fights are not contests purely of technique, and effective techniques are not the same for every fighter. Ali leaned back from punches because, for him, with his reflexes, speed and height, it worked! It wouldn't work for Louis or other smaller, less talented fighters.
The quote about Uzcudun is incorrect, it was Braddock who had his teeth put through his mouth piece. Uzcudun had his bridge broken, and his gold teeth strewn on the ring canvas like a bracelet. N B Godoy was down in the 5th against Pedro Proenza 1932
Prime Ali's hand and foot speed are too much for Louis. I think Louis' methodical style is wrong against Ali, the best approach you could have was either educated pressure ala Frazier, or the ability to neutralize the weapons of a good boxer and keep them off balance with your own jab and defensive ability. (Norton).
Ali dominates Louis, I suggest watching Louis against Conn 1, Schmelling 1 and Walcott 1 and coming back and saying he has a cats in hell chance against Ali, MADNESS!!!!
You're forgetting about Ali's Anchor punch. It knocked out a human freight train named Sonny Liston. It only traveled 6".
I see a few have mentioned Ali's susceptibility to left hooks (all true of course) but nobodies mentioned Louis's susceptibility to a right hand. Joe, even in his prime, took his fair share of rights and im not entirely sure he could take 15 rounds of Ali;s right. Now im not suggesting Ali;s right was as powerful (or even better) than joes left but i am suggesting it could be big factor in this fight. If i was a betting man, which i am, i'd fancy Ali's straight right to be in Joes face a lot more than Joes left hook in Ali's. Two great fighters, the top 2 IMO, but Ali's right takes it for me. I can see a late KO or stoppage for Ali. I just cant see Joe KO'ing him or outpointing him. just my two cents
A factor that makes this match up chalanging to pick is that Ali did not fight his tougest fights till his second career. He won fights more through his desire and hart than his skills/ability/talent like he did in his first career. By the time he fought Liston and Paterson neather was as good as Frazier, Foreman or even Norton. Frazier and Norton both were able to beat Ali. Also what would have been the result of Ali/Foreman if Foreman had better stamana or at least knew how to pace himself? The key here is control. Louis wants to pin Ali to the ropes and Ali wants to keep the fight in the center of the ring. I think early on Ali will have a lot of secuess, but not as much as some might think. He'll be able to stay center ring for most of each round. I can him taking at least four of the first six rounds. Louis hits hard and he dose not waste punches. Louis will be putting in body work from the opening bell. By the 8th or 9th round they will start to pay divedends. Ali will slow down, and Louis will be able to force the fight to the ropes. It's hard to see Ali being stopped by anyone, but I can see Louis dropping Ali once or twice. Lois will finish stronger and will have enough of the middle rounds to get the win.
