Educated guess work. I don't think it's particularly outlandish to say it's better for a guy's notoriety to fight on the biggest American boxing broadcaster more often than not. I still don't see a feasible alternative to fighting Dzinziruk at that point in time that would have done anything for his popularity or would have matched the 7 figures he got for the fight.
Good for you. Bottom line, Sergio wanted to be on TV, he made the choice to fight the smaller man for the money and tv coverage. Why am I wrong in saying exactly what the facts are? You think he would've been in a better position, but as much as you say it's an educated guess, it's still just that, a guess. Chavez fought him cause he thought he was ready, not cause Sergio made him fight with his overwhelming popularity.
People need to realise Martinez is a natural 154lb fighter and not a natural middleweight. He only started fighting at 160 in 2009 against another fighter Mayweather avoided in Paul Williams. Hell, he only weighed 157lbs in his fight against Macklin, Mayweather fans need to realise this. Martinez v Mayweather is a natural, but Floyd is that insecure and controlling that he will only fight fighters in which he has a massive advantage over at the time of the fight.
False dichotomy. Martinez didn't have to be more popular than Chavez to get a fight with him, but he damn well had to have a sufficient level of notoriety for Chavez to even want to fight him and not another middleweight. No one was calling for Chavez to fight Sturm nor Pirog nor Geale nor any of the other middleweights. It's not a pure coincidence that the fight demanded just so happened to feature the one other middleweight who got consistent TV dates.
Martinez's vocal bashing of Chavez got his attention, and subsequently the fight. His belt being handed to Chavez, got him the fight. The overall storyline between the two fighters got him the fight, not fighting Darren Barker and Matthew Macklin. But whatever makes you feel better. Just keep typing...:verysad
So because Martinez comes in under the MW limit, he's a natural JMW. Okay, fair enough. Mayweather came in at 151 against Cotto(e) right after eating and drinking, so by your logic, what does that make Floyd?
I'm tired of all this weight jumping an dropping down ****. I wish fighters would stay in their divisions an dominate that division.
GGG, quillin. There is still dangerous an interesting fights for sergio You chose to be middle weight clean house at middleweight.
Sour grapes? :think Best to know when to call it quits. There's always the next EVT. You also never answered who would've been a better alternative to the Dzinziruk fight? Oh yeah, he choice it. That's great. Just like how Floyd choice Marquez, Hatton, and older Oscar as opposed to Margarito, Cotto, and Paul Williams? It's not like you've ever made mention of these choices. Easier to gloss over I guess. As a boxing fan I'd like the Martinez-Mayweather fight. It's one of the best fights potentially out there. If not that, I'd like Martinez to eventually fight Pirog. If not Martinez or retirement, I'd like Floyd to give Canelo a chance at least. He lacks mobility, and maybe can appear a tad mechanical, but has the power and punch variety to make things interesting.
It makes Mayweather a good matchmaker. He's happy to fight at 154 against the faded Cottos and semi retired De la Hoyas of this world, but when it comes down to fighting Martinez who whilst not in his prime is still elite he shouldnt have to Especially as Martinez is a natural 154 and would be willing to come back down to fight Floyd at that weight. Martinez was avoided for ages and moving up to middleweight was a gamble and it's paid off. If Floyd doesn't want to fight at 154 he should give up the trinkett.
