I do not think that Tunney over Tyson can be justified.

For all his failings, Tysons resume has some prety compeling statistics linked to it.

I have always felt this to be the case as well. There is very little balance where opinions of Tyson are concerned. In fact, I can think of few men for whom this applies as much or more. I lived through the man's era and can remember when he was deemed as the most feared man on earth and quite possibly the greatest of all time... All of a sudden he drops one fight against a lesser opponent, and people who picked him to best Muhammad Ali started having doubts about him even beating Floyd Patterson... Crazy world we live in...

This is exactly what I'm talking about. Come on, Vitali has beat plenty of decent HWs... real HWs. Maybe better fighters were out there, but those guys didn't want to fight Vitali (Lewis retired when he should have fought Vitali again for example). Vitali has beat-

Herbie Hide KO2 (WBO HW Champ)

Obed Sullivan KO9 (2x HW Champ/Non-World Titles, WBO World Title Challenger)

    Timo Hoffmann W12 (4x HW Champ/Non-World Titles)

Orlin Norris KO1 (CW, SCW, and 2x NABF HW Champ)

Ross Puritty KO11 (WBC International HW Champ)

Vaughn Bean KO11 (2x HW World Title Challenger)

    Larry Donald KO10 (5x HW Champ/Non-World Titles)

    Kirk Johnson KO2 (2x HW Champ/Non-World Titles)

Corris Sanders KO8 (WBO and WBU HW Champ, HW World Title Challenger)

Danny Williams KO8 (4x HW Champ/Non-World Titles, HW World Title Challeneger)

Sam Peter KO8 (HW World Champ)

Juan G. Gomez KO9 (CW World Champ, 4x HW Champ/Non-World Titles, HW World Title Challenger)

Chris Arreola KO10 (4x HW Champ/Non-World titles, HW World Title Challenger)

Kevin Johnson W12 (HW Champ/Non-World Title, HW World Title Challenger)

Albert Sosnowski KO10 (WBF HW Champ, HW World Title Challenger)

Shannon Briggs W12 (Lineal HW Champ, WBO HW Champ)

Odlainer Solis KO1 (3x HW Champ/Non-World Titles, HW World Title Challenger)

Tomasz Adamek KO10 (LHW and CW World Champ, 4x HW Champ/Non-World Titles, HW World Title Challenger)

Dereck Chisora KO1 (2x HW Champ/Non-World Titles, HW World Title Challenger)

Manuel Charr KO4 (HW Champ/Non-World Title, HW World Title Challenger)

Maybe none are HOF material but they are all at least decent. He's 20-0 vs. these men.

tunney gets rated more in a lb for lb sense at heavy i think and that's why he is so high on some people's lists. tyson is the better heavy, tunney is better lb for lb.

Sanders, Johnson and Peter were decent but all grossly out of shape when Vitali beat them. Some names on that list are just cringeworthy.

Tunney has good chance, I pick Tyson though. As for why anyone would pick Tunney, his record is one thing--71 fights in era when he was often matched tough, and never ko'd, only one loss. Fought best of era, and had style to hold off and keep away from Tyson. I rank Tyson over him, but I have others over him too, yet give him chance against anyone. One thing, he retired so soon after becoming champ, due to incredible (for those times ) amount of money he made on Dempsey fight. If he had needed to stay on while, he might be rated higher.

I rank him #10 far above Tunney and Johnson H2H. I have it Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis, Larry Holmes, George Foreman, Joe Frazier, Wladimir Klitschko, Vitali Klitschko, Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson, Rocky Marciano, Jack Dempsey, Sonny Liston, Max Schmeling, Riddick Bowe, Floyd Patterson, Ken Norton, Max Baer, Archie Moore, Ezzard Charles, Jersey Joe Walcott, Gene Tunney, Jack Johnson, Sam Langford, Jerry Quarry.

What would have made Tyson better is if he'd fought and beat Holyfield, Lewis, Foreman, Michael Moore, and Ray Mercer. Holyfield got all those fights and beat Tyson twice so I think it's natural to rank him higher.

I believe Tunney would have beaten every title holder that came between him and Louis.

Why would you have Archie Moore over Ezzard Charles? That's like wiping your ass before you ****, it doesn't make sense.

I agree that some are, but he fought many more big and capable fighters than Liston ever faced. Sure, Patterson, Folley, and Machen had skill but they were small and not very durable. Liston never proved his worth vs. a decent big HW.

It's not completely unfair that one rates Tunney over Tyson on the basis of the Dempsey victories alone.

We're aware that Jack was an aged Tiger, but that doesn't change the apocalyptic climate before the first bell.

Time has blunted the significance of what Gene did on that rain-soaked evening. Few gave him a prayer, he had stopped reading the print as a result of a nightmare, and as Dempsey stormed at him it must've taken some nerve to keep it together.

Additionally, fans forget that these were hard, fast-paced bouts. Ten rounds sure, but Tunney showed his mettle in the rematch getting up from a combination that would have blasted many a good fighter.

The twenty rounds he shared, even with that Dempsey, demonstrated a rare command of the ring and are rightfully remembered as stand-out achievements in the division.

    A counter-argument is understandable.
