Proper choke holds are usually blood chokes which cannot be resisted. The best way to "resist" them is to counter the hold or escape it before it is locked in. Most chokes have no escape once they are hooked in. You should check out the ESB MMA Forum Guide to Submissions to help you understand how they work. http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=145435

Yes. At the VERY VERY least skills in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu will give you a full range of options for how much lethality you wish to use. You can choke someone out without doing any real damage to their person. Or you can break one of their joints (elbow, knee, shoulder) or you can continue to hold a choke and cause brain damage or death. A boxer who uses his boxing skills in a fight is basically confined to bludgeoning his opponent with his fists. Also, in a street fight without gloves a boxer can easily hurt his hands.
out of interest how long does a choke need to be applied after the person loses consciousness to lead to death / no killer
It depends how tight the choke is on and the person being choked, you can lose consciousness in a few seconds if the choke is on tight. And regain conciousness in as little as 5 seconds, from my exspearience. I think the choke has to be on for some time for brain cells to start dieing, maybe a min is what I heard. And the choke has to be held on for a couple min for a person to actually die, I think that is what I heard. I was choked out to unconsciousnes a half dozen times and after being choked out you feel like you maybe had a little nap and it does not really effect you at all afterwards and I just continued the ground work training.
Your best bet is to understand how and where the pressure is being applied so you can manoeuvre yourself away from it I.e. in a guillotine choke you want to push up to release the pressure on your throat, hence the reason you are in big trouble if the submitter also has you in his guard.
The brain starts to shut down after 1-2 min if it doesnt get oxygen after that the brain starts to get heavily damaged and might die completely
No its impossible to kill someone from choking them to death with strangulation. In truth nobody has even ever thought of the words to describe such a think as choking someone to death by strangulation. You wont find it in books anywhere. I find the best way to avoid a choke hold is to allow oneself to be choked and then simply keep enduring it. One simply needs to hold their breath for a long time acting like they are being strangled to death and then they can simply be resting while their opponent is using up all of his energy.
with my grandad i held it for close to 45 minutes i really wanted to be sure :good after 5 minutes there was no more movement other than his bowels :thumbsup
