Are Todays Heavyweights Capable Of Fighting Like This?

Lol, funny how some posters mention something about "skills", when it simply looks like a bar fight. Two guys standing infront of eachother, wrestling and throwing hooks. Bowe looked good, when he was fighting guys smaller than himself. Boxers with european style, like golota or lewis would simply schooled bowe's ass.

 

They showed plenty of skills throughout that whole fight. The fact that you pretty much based your observation on that one gif showed that you didn't even watch the match.

You redeemed yourself by saying Lewis will school Bowe though, great insight there.

Bowe and holyfield were both limited fighters when it comes to skills. Holy was unbelievable warrior, you can see that also in the tyson fight. In the first rounds tyson was just to quick for holyfield, so holy mostly clinched and wrestled with tyson untill tyson got tired and lost his speed. I saw bowe vs holyfield and the fight mostly looked like in this gif.

 

I know they are skilled, but standing infront of eachother and brawling like in a street fight isn't something that you can call "showing skills", tall good euro fighters would jab the **** out of holyfield or bowe, landing some big right straight punches throughout the fight. I mean, just look how golota took bowe to school. It's great that golota bowe fights happened, otherwise we would have here endless **** posts about how the boxers from previous boxing eras were better than todays boxers. Golota fought top guys from the 90's and 00's, I don't think today's HW div is any worse than in the 90's. Just because americans are c level HW's doesn't mean that the the division is poor. Actually it's way deeper in talent than the 60's, 70's and the 80's.

 

If only I hadn't have thrown away my old boxing magazines I could write down the articles written at that time, practically any previous era, that said the current heavyweight division sucks compared to the previous generations. Back when Bowe and Holyfield fought the concensus among boxing fans and boxing writers was that it sucked then too and Bowe was a lazy slob and Holyman was an undersized cruiserweight who was only capable of making it back then because the talent level in the heavyweight division was so bad back then. I know I'm not the only one around who read the magazines but it's very much been a constant cliche "heavyweights are in their all time worst". Of course, some of us could write a lengthy discourse on why there are several previous eras of heavyweights that could not hang with todays. Think the racially segregated heavyweight champ had to compete in a division comparable to today's heavyweight division? Think that when Carpo and the mob controlled boxing they didn't stack the deck and deny talented fighters a true shot at the heavyweight championship? Think that when a certain promoter controlled the heavyweight division he elevated the sport with great fights or furthered his own financial situation by carefully controlling the heavyweight division? Think the division didn't get more competitive once former Soviet countries entered the world of professional boxing?


There are posts in this thread where supposedly knowledgeable fight fans don't seem to recognize what an overhook and a collar tie is.

That's like asking if a tennis player of the 2000s is able to play like the tennis players in 1930s. Or if a chess player from 2010 could play like they did in the 1800s. Sure they could, but why would they when the sport has evolved?

Toe-to-toe banging with a crouched back exposing your chin is old-school boxing. Entertaining yes, but not very smart.

 

probably around 68-72 was about is good as it can get. The fighters fought each other, they were on televsion and public figures. Today's heavyweights are somewhat underrated, at least the top ten are. I'll be bold enough to suggest that the 36 year old Muhamad Ali who lost his heavyweight crown to Leon Spinks, who only had 8 professional fights, would lose to a 36 year old Vladimir Klitschko who beat David Haye.

Heavys not don't have the stamina and training to do this... I am sure that Areola Would get tired just watching it

I think modern fighters listen to these two guys and realize boxing is about hitting and NOT getting hit.:-(
