I thought Holyfield vs. Lewis II was a draw. Ray Mancini is underrated as a fighter. Certainly not an all time great, but the version from 1980-1983 would have been a tough fight for anyone. Sergio Martinez is vastly overrated. No issue with him being viewed as the #1 Middleweight now, but I don't think he would have bothered other past champions all that much. Despite the above statement, I think current era fighters are just as good as older era fighters, if not better due to advanced training methods and PEDs. I don't think getting stopped 3 times in 60+ fights means Thomas Hearns had a glass chin. I think it meant he took risks and occasionally lost out on them.
ATG is a subjective thing and 50 fighters would not do great in every time, that's stupid as is saying 50 top guys from each weight class historically deserve to be "ATGs". I'm a "ATG list killah" for a reason. Pacquiao and Floyd are by far the most overrated fighters now and I don't think they would do great in every time. Maybe because this is their era but damn people are quick to fight like schoolgirls over them especially in General its sickening. Cotto has the jab to trouble Martinez but his size and lack of durability would be big question marks if they fight. Give Barker the skills of Cotto and I think he would've beaten him. Emmanuel Augustus gave Floyd a harder test than Pacquiao could at least while Floyd is dedicated to boxing. OJ was framed! Patterson is very damn underrated. Duran and Clottey would've won their fights(SRL 2, Pacquiao) had they drunk tea and not had diarrhea. Size gets overrated as skills and determination can cancel that out
Being a late 70s/early 80s fighter means he's automatically favored. :-( Oscar would completely pick him apart off his jab. Cuevas was definitively one dimensional and it would take an assault he wouldn't be capable of landing to get Oscar out of there.
more recently im gonna take **** for these im sure Bradley beat Pac Aydin beat Guerrero Cloud beat Campillo
Meh, so don't agree Buttercup. I think De La Hoya would have been too much for Cuevas. Just a bad style match-up for Pipino. The only shot he'd have is if Oscar wore heels during the fight and not just after.
I can respect that. Although I think it gets somewhat diabolical when people are flatly predicting random contenders from previous eras to carve him up. A southpaw with Martinez' speed, use of angles and stamina could potentially be problematic for anybody at the weight. It's interesting Hagler beat a guy who was at his most dangerous at 147, peaked at 154 and was in his first fight at 160 to get recognition as a Great fighter. As for Martinez, well, Martinez isn't considered great but very good. That'll come when he beats GGG sometime next year, who goes on to rule the division for years with Sergio in retirement. :yep
P4P is worthless. Ppl shouldn't care so much about it cuz it ain't even real rankings. When guys who weren't mainstream stars were in the #1 spot, it ain't get so much play. Just a nice lil accolade to have. But nowadays everybody goes crazy over it, and I think it's wack.
Nobody hangs around in the same division anymore for too long to go the traditional route of achieving greatness.
-Robert Garcia and brother Naz are the 2 greatest trainers in Boxing today. -Emanuel Steward is the greatest trainer ever. -Freddie Roach isn't really that good, he has just done a very good job of cashing in on Manny Pacuiao's success. -Leo Santa Cruz will be the next Mexican boxing legend, and ATG, not Chavez Jr. & not Canelo. -If they fought as pro's in their primes Riddick Bowe would have destroyed Lennox Lewis. -History will not look as favorably on Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather as most of their fans think. Not fighting each other will severely tarnish their legacies and ATG status. -It was a close fight, but Tim Bradley won 115-113 against Pacquiao. -Marvelous Marvin Hagler won that fight against Leonard, now that is a ****ing disgraceful, robbery of a decision!
^ True bout Zab. Another opinion I have is the fast pace of a fight doesn't mean it should automatically be a FOTY candidate. I thought Lopez-Saldio II looked like a bumfight and got pleasure watching Salido against Marquez much more. He actually showed solid skills against Marquez which I appreciated more. Floyd-Cotto is FOTY for me so far. Of course this is opinion but do not care how fast paced a fight is, I just don't get the same warm feelings I do when seeing a very technical fight. Of course they can be mixed with both elements such as Toney-Mccallum 1 and Barrera-Morales 1 which is great for me because both display so many fundamental elements of the sport as long as you understand whats going on. Don't say a don't enjoy sloppy scraps every now and then as the point of an art is to have as many diverse styles as possible. Though my bread and butter is technicians who show very solid combinations and fight in a very measuring approach for the most part. Still the goal is to hit and not get hit so I like my fighters to stick to that though again, many styles means many kind of fights which is intriguing anyway you look at it. Ya never for sure what you'll get and that's the beauty of it! Brawler or Technician! Hence, "styles make fights".
You're either making a joke, or have no idea about Great Britian's boxing history Ted Lewis, Jimmy Wilde, Bob Fitzsimmons, Freddie Welsh, Jim Driscoll, Jackie Berg & Benny Lynch just to name a few are better than Prince Naz every thought about being. With his one fight against world class opposition, and getting schooled in that fight at that.
