I guess it depends on what Roy was weighing in at by fight-time during his SMW and LH career...which is also the version I would rather place in with Rocky than the one fight he had against Ruiz since the extra weight (to me) was to much weight for him to fight at a high pace. Modern LH's, even SMWs, can weigh in at 185+ by fight-time. Roy wouldn't be to small at his weight he carried at LH, maybe even SMW, because the era Rocky was in wasn't all that big when it came to the top tier fighters. And it is Rocky we are talking about who was a 185 pound fighter. That's a modern LH. Ezzard Charles himself was a MW who gradually moved up to HW and even then, was no more than a LH fighting in this specific smaller HW era. Interesting fight but for the Roy-Fans, which fighters are close to Rocky that Roy fought from SMW-LH that would indicate Roy would win against Rocky? thank you for having a reasonable opinion here. i don't think people realize how good jones was and for some on here, jones didn't fight in the 40s so there's no way he could have beaten anyone from that era. a result that hasn't been talked about here is jones stopping rocky on cuts. rocky could bust up and jones might be able to take advantage. i personally can't see roy stopping rocky any other way.
its strange...jones seems to have lost a **** ton of respect and credit in this thread while the forum as the whole has been a bit kinder to him lately. you can't feel he loses this fight without dimishing him as a fighter and his skills.
burt, i need to call you on your bull****. jones did challenge evander in '97 right after the tyson fights. merchant refers to it in the post-fight interview vs ruiz. tyson and lewis fights were discussed in 2003. lewis decided to retire and tyson couldn't get his act together and then eventually got ko'ed by danny williams. danny sheridan set jones as a 2 to 1 favorite over tyson after jones won the ruiz fight. jones' main problem with beating ruiz (besides the fact it was ruiz) was that he made it look too easy. most didn't give roy any credit and it was all because ruiz sucked.
ruiz is often written off as if he wouldn't even be a journeyman in the 30s, 40s or 50s. like his style or not, but he would certainly have been a decent heavyweight and likely ranked in many eras. jones was a natural middleweight which makes his achivement that much more remarkable. any middleweight beating so thoroughly any ranked and solid heavyweight is damn impressive imo
agreed. he was just hell to watch. wins over a 38 yr old holyfield, rahman and golota are better wins than most heavys have had in the last decade.
absolutely. he had a lot of wins over ranked guys. and he was destroyed by jones, which was as comprehensive a win over ruiz since tua. ruiz cannot compare with marciano. no doubt and their styles were VERY different. but his performance in that fight indicate his speed and skill at a weight comparable to rocky's and if he can fight that way and at that level against marciano, he does NOT get run over or destroyed.
yes, i never saw tiger ted lowry fight but i'm willing to bet jones was at least on his level as a boxer. jones might be able to last a few rounds in there after all.
I don't see how beating John Ruiz makes a case for anyone, Jones too, being great heavyweight. Ruiz was tough and willing, but biggest asset was his management and promotion team getting him into one big fight after another.
Ok ,k You called me on my "bull****" as you described me, cause I VOICED MY OPINION...I yield to your infinite wisdom, but I say still , that Marciano, Evander, Tyson, Lewis , at their best, destroys Roy Jones at his best though I am called by you a BULLSHITER...So eloquent of you sir... Good day !
not calling you out over your opinions. all of the fighters you listed would all be favored over jones. i was referring to you saying jones never challenged any of them when they were at or close to their prime. he did with holyfield and evander felt he could make more money elsewhere. that would have been a huge fight for jones but evander went on to make many more huge fights vs others. jones, not so much.
In a 4 rounder we can probably all agree RJJ gets the UD everytime. Marciano will simply never catch him, and RJJ won't tire in 4 rounds.
I think jones actually wins over ten rounds, I think against any sub 200 fighters i'd favour Jones over ten rounds. But over twelve and more I see Rocky beating everyone below that limit.
