DiBella on GGG: "Who would give a flying ****?"

"Who would give a flying ****, and why are you even asking?" DiBella said. "Who knows Gennady Golovkin other than you, me and a few other people? How many people would he bring to the table? How much money would he generate? He is the last guy ... He is a very good fighter, but it's a fight that economically makes no sense."

It was suggested to DiBella that perhaps he is afraid to put Martinez in wh Golovkin, a very heavy-handed fighter who is 24-0 with 21 knockouts. DiBella assured us that is absolutely not the case, that it's strictly business.

Golovkin has fought just once in the U.S. and is not a household name, the kind that generates ticket sales and TV revenue. And since Martinez is 37 and a late bloomer as far as making a big name for himself as well as big money, DiBella is simply not interested.

"There are a lot of other fighters who have nothing to do," said DiBella, who has promoted Martinez the past five years. "Let him fight (Dmitry) Pirog. Let him fight someone else who needs to make a name in the States. He (Golovkin) fought a stiff (Grzegorz Proksa) in his last fight. I think Golovkin beats Pirog, I think he beats a lot of the other middleweights.

"But he didn't beat anyone in his last fight and this is Sergio's time to make a lot of money. ... We're not going to fight fights that do not generate any income."

DiBella will be happy to know he has at least one ally in this by the name of Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions.

"Just because a guy shows up once on HBO (against Proksa) and boxing media raves about him and now he feels like he deserves to have a fight against Sergio Martinez, I think that is really ridiculous," Schaefer said.

Fair enough really. Golovkin hasn't earned the shot and doesn't bring any money to the table. Martinez is 37 and has travelled a tough road to get to the position he is in. He's earned the right to secure his future. There's plenty of other opponents out there for Triple G.

Martinez have finally got to a great position, they don't want to ruin it.

I don't blame them, because this is what boxing as become, but i still dislike it. The way they dismiss it as a stupid notion that they fight.

There arguable the best to 154'ers in the sport. Of course they should be fighting.

Dibella is a clown ass. This is the disrespect the number 3 guy in the division gets.

 

To be fair, DiBella does have a point. All GGG has at the moment is an impressive knockout ratio and knee-jerk hype after his first showing in the States. He has plenty of opponents to make noise with, and I don't blame DiBella for wanting him to do that first before knocking on Martinez's door. By this time next year, GGG's handlers should have had him in with at least one common opponent (as well as one or two other decent middleweights) before demanding a fight.

Edit: And yes, a fight with a Pirog would definitely shorten the above process. Beating up the guy Martinez apparently didn't wanna' bother with? Yes please!

 

If you guys were Martinez, and in his position you would absolutely NOT fight GGG. It's not like Mayweather at 31 or 32 and retiring to avoid Pac. You still have plenty of career at that point. Martinez is almost 38 years old, has been on the wrong side of many decisions, and finally made a name for himself.
Not like he's moving to 154 to fight tomato cans. He wants to fight the best fighters at 154... Mayweather, Cotto, Canelo, etc. All those guys are way more proven than GGG, and you probably earn about 20x the $ for fighting them.
Some of you are bashing Martinez for beating Barker, but yet... what has GGG done? If Martinez beats him tomorrow he'll be thrown in the category with Barker, a guy unproven whom Sergio beat up. If he'd lose it'd be lights out for his career.
Martinez has fought everybody and is proven to be a warrior in there. Don't think he's scared, but he's smart.

 

Can't blame Martinez for going after big names at 37 yrs old, just a few fights left on him.
He's asking for big names and he well deserves it.
