Mick Hennessy is a name that will often evoke some harsh reactions amongst boxing fans often derided as "Fat Mick" he is a man who many believe nearly squandered the career of Carl Froch. He has been constantly berated for his poor promotion.

I feel that this is an unfair criticism and would like to state the claim that Hennessy is one of our best promoters.

This may be an impassioned response as it was watching Fight Nights on ITV4 that got me into regularly watching boxing and converting me from a casual to a hardcore fan and for this I am ever grateful.

The primary charge I see leveled at Mick is that he "ruined" Frochs mainstream career and was a poor promoter not getting Froch the exposure that is star deserved. I think this is harsh as Carl's rise to prominence coincided with the start of the recession and the ultimate end of Hennessys terrestrial contract. Before this however he had delivered Froch in a FOTY candidate at primetime on ITV. This apparently was not enough to save his contract. He then placed Froch in at the deep end in the US against Taylor, before getting him a place in the S6 not bad promotion if I say so myself. The fact he was blacklisted from Sky should not be held as a mark against him. When inferior shows and headliners were fighting whilst Froch was banished to Primetime.

Hennessy had at one time Froch, Barker, Fury, Witter, Murray all in his stable. Those that have left have gone onto big fights however I dont think any of those would have been void of the same opportunities under Hennessy.

I think his prospect matchmaking is very good if you look at Froch, Fury and more recently Eubank he rarely puts fighters in matches that dont demonstrate some sort of progression. His ability to bounce back with a terrestrial tv deal despite these setbacks demonstrates he is a survivor I am in no doubt that. Fury, Degale and Galahad will all get big fights in 2013.... on terrestrial tv.

    Mick Hennessy I salute you!

I don't mind Mick to be honest, he should learn to promote fighters in there home town to build a following, he puts on decent fights most of the time and fair play to him on getting the Channel 5 deal.

Hopefully he can add a few more fighters to his stable.

Clearly Hennesy is the best promoter from a fans point of view as well as growing the sport. That much should be obvious. Any promoter that is bringing big fights to a terrestrial audience is doing a bang up job. The facts are Tyson Fury has had more than twice as many viewers as David Haye's biggest ever watched fight.

I met him at a Steve Bunce show in Nottingham and he is genuinely a top man, it was was a few weeks after the Tyson Fury fight with Mcdermott an he admitted he was tougher than they thought and Tyson was lucky to get the nod, I asked him what prospect he wished he signed and he said Groves, he is easily 1 of the nicest men in boxing i've ever met and the stick he gets in my opinion is unwarranted

Hennessy has done well to get a TV deal with ITV and Channel 5. The issue is, he does a terrible job with those contracts. Poorly produced, amateurish shows with only one interesting fight on the card. It's not good enough and in the long run, when it's the only boxing casual fans are exposed to, its not a good thing.

Casual fans need good cards and competitive fights, which Hennessy doesn't provide.

Mick's had a lot to deal with but TBH he's tried to do things the right way. Always tried to get fighters through domestic and european belts and then go for WBC.

He's put on some quality shows, and fighters have came through his handiling rather well. He's a ducker and diver and lets face it, he's got himself terrestial TV when the others have gone tits up or had to go cap in hand to Frank.

Good thread, he's a easy guy to mock but in reality i think he pisses on likes of Maloney who have served up som abject shows over the years.

Hang on a second. So not only is he a good promoter, but he's also a nice man?

Well, in that case Froch is a lying scum bag and we're all idiots.

We all know he couldn't promote Froch for ****. And Froch said he had a very nasty break-up with him $oo.

Sorry, but I'm going to believe Froch on this one.

A question I've asked before: When Eubank fought Benn for the first time on ITV, what were the televised undercard fights?

He's inept and extremely lucky to have the tv deal he has.
When or what does he actually do to PROMOTE his shows/fighters?
The way he messed up securing Froch home advantage in his bout with Abraham was buffoonery at its best

Aside from that though he hadn't done too badly with Froch. he manouevered him nicely into the vacant WBC shot.

Two big mistakes he did make - the one you mentioned and not getting Froch on TV for the Taylor fight.

He was the man that built Froch into an attraction in his home town he was packing out the Nottingham Arena for British Title fights who are people specifically referring to when they say he hasnt promoted a fighter?

I think the Taylor fight he was unlucky with that was right at the end of his TV deal and was just able to scrape a rerun the next day at about 11 at night. I dont think him or Froch had any problems with each other the fact was that the lack of a tv deal drove a wedge between them that was basically facilitated by Sky because they didnt want to give Hennessy a contract they wanted him to move to Matchroom/******.

A bit sad that you can't have your own opinion.

He ****ed up with Froch by demanding ITV for silly money then trying to do a £10 internet stream for it when they told him to do one. He's the main reason Primetime are around and he buggered up again with Froch against Abraham. It's not like his ITV deal had ended with the Froch V's Taylor fiasco, he still put some shite like Barker V's Butler, John O'Donnell Vs Tom Glover and didn't make Murray Vs Thaxton when it was relevant.

He did apparently have some pretty serious **** going on in his personal life back then and it wasn't all bad so I'm willing to ease up on my dislike and may grow to think he's decent so long as he doesn't **** up so consistently and in such major ways again. Frank Maloney on the other hand gave us pregnant Latvians and can't get David Price out for more than 3 fights this year.

Mick got boxing on 5, fair play.

No they don't. Casuals want to see someone they've heard of and half a dozen knockdowns.

I do have my own opinion though. Fat Mick is a **** promoter, given the opportunities he's had and given the fighters that stayed loyal to him for a long time. Is he a nice person? I don't care.
