The top characteristics I look for in a fighter are Power, Chin, Will and a huge bonus is a big left hook. Naturally I was attracted to fighters like Jack Dempsey, Joe Frazier, and Mike Tyson. They all are very aggressive swarmers with big left hooks yet stylistically I believe they differ.

Jack Dempsey
pretty much invented to bob and weave defense. Used head movement on his way inside to get hit less and be able to create openings to counter effectively. Dempsey was absolutely ferocious. He was a fast starter and one of the first fighters to effectively use combination punching. His speed and power complimented his ruthlessness. He would try to get inside and take you out as quickly and brutally as possible. He had two left hooks: one short tight left hook (see Jack Sharkey KO) and a wider more looping left hook (see tunney rematch before knocking Gene down he lunges in with a big left hook that starts the barrage) Although Dempsey's left hook was perhaps his best shot. that was not the only weapon in his arsenal his short uppercuts were deadly as well as his right cross/overhand. Dempsey was a two handed fighter. Jack Dempsey's chin was granite, he could take a lot of punishment and keep coming (see the Firpo fight) Disclaimer:

Joe Frazier Frazier to used a more evolved style of bob and weave like Dempsey however it took him much longer to start "smoking" rather than being a quick knockout artist Frazier was a true pressure fighter. His left hook did have one punch KO power but usually he'd work their body and wear them out before going in for the kill. Frazier has a phenomenal left hook (see 15th round of Ali I) He however depended on that left hook as his primary weapon. Very rarely did he throw his right hand. In that sense he was limited but his left hook was so good it was as if he didnt need a right hand. However it remains a limitation nonetheless. Frazier had phenomenal endurance (see Ali I and III) and tremendous will. Joe refused to lose and would keep coming at you if you hit him with a bat. The epitome of a Philadelphia fighter. That being said his chin is rather suspect. A man with the style of joe frazier would not succeed with a bad chin so in no way am I saying he had a glass jaw. He's been floored and/or hurt (see Ali III, Bonavena I, Foreman I and II) He did keep getting up after foreman floored him 6 times, ali hurt him a couple of times and he wasn’t known as a puncher. I think his heart made up for his chin but the fact is, you could hurt smoking joe

Mike Tyson Iron Mike bobbed and weaved but he used the cus d’amato peek a boo style (see Floyd Patterson, Jose Torres, Kevin Rooney) holding his gloves high on his face, palms facing inward and moving his head/upperbody side to side He had short reach and had to get on the inside like Dempsey and Frazier He’d slip punches and dash inside throw punches in bunches to the body and then finish off with shots upstairs. Like Dempsey he was a very fast starter and most dangerous in the early goings of a fight. He used his short height to his advantage in the heavyweight division to get more torque/leverage on his shots. Tyson would also spring up from a low crouch with lunging hooks from mid-range. He was the evolution of Dempsey’s style. He had KO power in either hand, fast starter, used bob and weave to get inside would make opponents miss and then make them pay for that. He had the same killer instinct and ferocity Dempsey displayed. Tyson had a vast arsenal of weapons he could hurt you with. His left hook had awesome power however his uppercuts, right hooks, crosses, and overhands were all just as lethal. Tyson was a great physical specimen as well. Legs like trees, ripped torso and a huge neck. Mike’s punch resistance was great too (see Ruddock I and II, Lewis, Bruno I) Mike took bombs from murderous punchers and shook them off and kept coming forward.

After accessing these fighters I think although they’re all similar in styles, what characteristics do they have that differ? I personally rank these three

1 Dempsey
2 Tyson
3 Frazier

Rank these fighters and explain your reasoning

1. Tyson. Was created by God to fight. To destroy human beings. No human past, present or future could ever live with him in his prime in a boxing ring, especially on June 27, 1988.

2. Dempsey. The Tyson of the past. Similar ferocity and intensity.

3. Frazier. Frazier will rank higher than both Mike and Jack on most peoples lists, but the man took to many hits and didn't have the same ferocity and savagery as Iron Mike or the Mauler.

Ricky, a great thread and spot on analysis on the 3 great swarmers...
I too have Jack Dempsey No 1 because in a fantasy match, all in their primes, all with their respective mentors, I feel Dempsey had a better style to beat Tyson than vice versa...For one thing Dempsey when young had great wheels, and was more shiftier than the heavier boned Tyson. He could move much better than Tyson if danger lurked...Another advantage Dempsey had was a much longer reach that could catch Tyson from a longer distance, very important I think...And Tyson needed more room for his poer shots, whilst Dempsey as shown in the second round film of the Firpo bout, from a clinch position, without any punching leverage, frees his left-hand and hits the bullish Firpo with 7-8 whirling lefthook uppercuts so
fast and deadly that you have to see to believe...And finally R, Dempsey had an inner toughness like Joe Frazier had, that gave them a do or die
attitude and inner confidence that Mike Tyson sorely lacked as later events proved...But I think that if a young Tyson hits you with that dynamite left uppercut, a ko is possible...My 3 favorite heavyweight buzz saws along with the slower power punching Marciano...Good show Ricky...:good

Oh God, this type of **** isn't going to come back now is it? Why would there be an especially with that bold? No man could live against the monster prime Tyson in a ring, especially not on Friday the 13th where his powers and thirst for children's blood quadrupled.
