Co-feature is Mexican-American vs. Mexican-American, and could be a show-stealer (Speedy Gonzalez has been in tons of those over the years; only question is whether he has enough left in the tank to put up another classic effort against a young gun).

The main event is another installment of the Mexico vs. Puerto Rico rivalry.

 

Andrew Cancio vs. Roger Gonzalez, 10 rounds @ super featherweight

 

Round 1

Gonzalez is jabbing and moving left as Cancio looks to put in a right to the body. Cancio blocks a leaping left hook, and misses a few reaches to the body. Left hook below the elbows by Cancio. Gonzalez keeps circling wide, digging a low left uppercut and jabbing up into Cancio's guard. Gonzalez moves right and whips out a left hook, landing but taking one back from Cancio at the same time. Another left hook for Gonzalez, and a jab to the body. Cancio is trying to find Gonzalez's body with his right hand, but only getting elbow. Combo up top by Cancio, blocked. Quick left hook by Gonzalez while stepping around Cancio. High guard by Gonzalez, letting Cancio unload on it before taking his turn leaping in with a left hook. Left uppercut, jab, right hand by Gonzalez, pushing Cancio back.

Round 2

Gonzalez is stepping smoothly around Cancio and snapping out left jabs. Cancio tries to walk him down and jab the body. Gonzalez ducks a jab and leans against Cancio, who spanks him with a right across the back. Gonzalez covers up as Cancio doubles a jab and puts a right hand through his gloves. Gonzalez is getting pushed to the ropes now, unable to circle out of Cancio's way quickly enough. Gonzalez deploys some low jabs while stepping off to the side. Cancio steps in and misses several hooks over Gonzalez's head as the veteran ducks. Gonzalez backs away. Left hook by Cancio.

Round 3

Gonzalez is getting backed up to the ropes now, as Cancio threatens with several pecking jabs clustered together and then rips a big right hand to the head. Gonzalez mounts an odd rally, jabbing and hooking as he backs up, but is getting caught more and more by Cancio's right hand to the ear. Cancio moves in quickly and catches Gonzalez with a combination. Right hand by Gonzalez trying to push off. Left hook to the body by Cancio. A pair of straights to the face by Cancio. Gonzalez covers up and gets bashed atop the head by an overhand right. Cancio whips the arm underneath for an uppercut, and Gonzalez nods his respect.

Round 4

Cancio is really tearing into Gonzalez now, putting hooks and overhand rights together. Doubling the hook. Gonzalez pushes out his jab and right hand while backing up, stalling for time. Desperate hook by Gonzalez, landing flush but having no effect. Cancio marches in, taking shorts steps to either side to cut the ring off, blocking Gonzalez's jabs. Combo by Cancio. Gonzalez lands a right hand while sliding his feet back and misses a left upper-hook. Gonzalez weaves by the ropes and escapes before Cancio can close in on him.

Round 5

Left and right uppercuts by Cancio. Gonzalez is taking a licking on the ropes. Left hooks to the head and body by Cancio. Gonzalez battles his way out to the center of the ring with a hard rally of straight shots, up on his toes. Gonzalez hops around, and whips out a hook. 1-2 by Gonzalez, clearly arm-weary. Cancio moves in and gets tied up. Gonzalez is walked into a corner, jabbing to no avail. Cancio walks him into another corner and rips away with jabs and rights downstairs, some hitting elbow but some getting through. Left hooks to the head by Cancio while grinding against Gonzalez, each man shoving into the other in a see-saw match of strength.

Round 6

Hard left hook by Cancio. Gonzalez is wilting, falling back against the ropes. Gonzalez is bravely firing back, but Cancio is becoming more and more accurate as Gonzalez's defensive movement slows to a crawl. Jabs to the belly and hooks to the chin by Cancio, scoring twice with the left before Gonzalez can even lift his arms. Gonzalez uses lateral movement, hands down, hopping in either direction and flicking up pot shots from the hips. Cancio walks him down, jab between the elbows, right around the back, left hook to the head. Gonzalez shells up and waits his turn, then wings a combo and misses before scampering across the Tecate logo. Cancio rushes inside and forces a jab through Gonzalez's chin, then digs a right to the body. Gonzalez has a puffy eye. Make that one puffy and the other cut. Cancio is eating jabs coming forward but not seeming to feel them. Cancio chases Gonzalez around the ring, jabbed in the face every few paces.

Round 7

Cancio is hooking the head and jabbing the body of Gonzalez while coming forward. Gonzalez ducks and lets Cancio brush the top of his cranium with shots while taking a breather. Slapping left hooks and looping rights by Gonzalez. Cancio is walking through jabs and short flurries and planting hard left hooks and rights hands on Gonzalez's face. Gonzalez dances away and backs himself into a corner with his arms down, whipping up deterrent shots but not getting any snap on them.

Inexplicably, the Solo Boxeo unofficial scorecard had it level heading into the 7th, 57-57. :blood

They gave him the 3rd, 4th, and 6th.

I'm a huge Speedy Gonzalez fan (and feel Ronny Rios got a gift over him not too far back) - but no. Just no.

Cancio's work rate may not be much to write home about, but he's landing BY FAR the more effective blows. It's sad to watch, as a longtime Gonzalez fan, him getting his ass knocked around the ring like this.

 

Round 8

Cancio is throwing the right hand to the body and between the eyes, pushing Gonzalez back. Counter jabs land for Gonzalez, and have started to mark up Cancio's face. Both men look like they've gone a hard fifteen already, instead of half that. HARD RIGHT HAND by Cancio. Gonzalez is hurt but gives a macho grin and wink while backing up.

Round 9

Cancio moves in, very aggressive, trapping Gonzalez on the ropes and pummeling his body. Hard overhands to the face as well. Gonzalez fights back!! Shoeshines to the face! Hard body whips by Cancio. Gonzalez is hurt by an overhand right and a left uppercut, sitting back against the middle rope before vacating and escaping to the left. Cancio hooks the body coming forward. Gonzalez answers back. Excellent action, but you can see Cancio in ascendancy and Gonzalez wearing down. Cuffing shot to the receding hairline by Cancio. Body shots by Gonzalez, wriggling clear of the ropes. Gonzalez stays well outside, flicking out jabs and rights from at least 2-3 feet away. Cancio doesn't bother rushing in, just watching Gonzalez sprint around the ring with his arms down. Cancio sidesteps and tries to maneuver Gonzalez into a corner with his jab. Uppercuts from the hip by Gonzalez, running wide circles around Cancio.
