Just watched Chacon vs Lopez, great fight! It is interesting seeing such a disciplined performance from Chacon, he really shows some great defensive moves and a good jab. I am intrigued as it seems strange that Chacon should have such a roller coaster career while Lopez has such a solid run as Featherweight champ. On this showing you would think it was the other way around! Maybe it was the Chacon's problems with Ruben Olivares and his inability to not get drawn into wars that led to his inconsistency? He just never seemed to have an answer to Olivares' hooks. I always thought of Chacon as an exciting slugger who over acheived, but he is so classy against Lopez you can see the sort of career Chacon could have had in a parallel universe.
It was his love of the night life and sometimes slack attitude to training that saw him struggle to make feather. His best run came after the suicide of his wife. He fought with purpose and when he should've been finished physically he turned in some of his most gutsy performances. Incredible career! What a warrior :deal
So was Lopez a more dedicated fighter? In the Chacon fight he looks like he still has a lot to learn, Chacons right is glued to his face the whole night! I don't know a lot about him, did he improve a lot after the defeat or did he just get well matched? He seemed to have had a mini slide after Chacon losing a couple of bouts before making a run at the title. What is a good fight to watch of his?
Chacon had the chin to take Lopez's shots and was the more skilled fighter. Lopez was straight up and hittable but able to decimate most. He could not get 'Schoolboy's' respect that night, and Chacon tattooed him with the right as you say.
All of this post is wrong , I could go d easy way and remind u Sanchez*2 , but if Chacon stopped him rather than got stopped by him , it is not just easy 4 me , but very hard 4u . But despite not belonging even in my "modern*"* top 110 p4p , he deserves a higher ranking than Ricardo Lopez :yep , which is not much really .
Well frank he never really hurt Sanchez now did he? And everything was wrong frank? I thought my grammar was perfect...
You could easily say, that when Bobby had his back up against the wall,,, and was 'well-motivated'- He could defeat any 126 lb. Featherweight or 130 lb. Super-Featherweight. Some bouts that were on the table - * vs. David 'Poison' Kotey * vs. Alfredo Escalara * vs. Andy Ganigan * vs. Rolando Navarette
Hey Babaluma, check out this video. Neat little backstory piece on the Chacon-Lopez fight, and its direct and indirect aftermath.... [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4afYmsjPJA[/ame]
I posted some Bobby Chacon History awhile back, with fight purses and opponent history. Bobby was pulling in some 'big money' back in 1972 thru 1975. Bobby was supposed to defend his WBC Featherweight Championship in December 1974 versus david 'Poison' Kotey, but the bout fell through. Unfortunately he didn't keep his mind on training for the rematch with Ruben Olivares on June 20, 1975 - and supposedly ate a half-dozen eggs before the bout, and had a 'bad stomach' entering the ring. (Result L KO 2) The 'Schoolboy' saw David 'Posion' Kotey 'upset' Ruben Olivares in September 1975, and then asked for a bout with the new Champion from Ghana, claiming that 'DK Poison' was only borrowing his Championship Belt. Unfortunately that bout never happened either, as Bobby ate his way out of the Featherweight Divsion, and was soon fighting at 132 lbs. This content is protected
