frazier's defenses were pretty horrible. he did have the advantage though of being joe frazier

 

totally agreed, i was just going by the post FOTC defenses (if that's when you feel his title reign started)

 

but if you INSIST on going by his whole resume, then frazier has one of the best ledgers of the last 50 years. i suppose

 

Most of the fighters being discussed were never hwt champion. These are the hwt champions since Patterson....Liston, Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Ali, Spinks, Ali, Holmes, Spinks, Tyson, Douglas, Holyfield, Bowe, Holyfield, Moore, Foreman, Briggs, Lewis, Rachman, Lewis, Klitschco. That's it. Who is the worst? Has to be Leon Spinks.....beat an out of shape shot Ali and lost it months later. No defences and fell into total obscurity after losing the title. Liston is a borderline top 10 all time great. Patterson certainly does not deserve worst champion status by any stretch of the imagination.

Yet 50yrs ago Patterson was champ, Liston goes on to KO him not once but twice in 1 round, and HES the worst champ:huh

People like to **** on Neon Leon, but remember he won the title from someone who was worse.

 

As much as I Love Sonny Liston,,,,,,

He 'undoubtedly' set boxing back more than a few notches.

But give him his 'kudo's, as nobody else had the 'balls' to pull that crap off.......'twice'.

 

Actually I was thinking more along the lines of the fact that he was an olympic gold medalist, first man to regain the heavyweight crown, rivals Mike Tyson as the youngest heavyweight champ of all time, had a career that spanned 20 years, and defeated the likes of Moore, Machen, Bonavena, Chuvalo, Johannson, and arguably Quarru in one of their meetings.. Doesn't make him the best, but he sure as hell wasn't the worst.
