    True,

Anyone can pick out the low points or the weakest accomplishments of any champion and use it to try and sum up their whole career. I myself prefer to look at EVERYTHING a fighter did and weigh the good with the bad. Patterson may not even make top 10 these days, but he's still an all time great in my book, and most certainly NOT the worst champion of the last 50 years.

He has not been a 'world title holder' in the last 50 years...

If the thread start was referring to the worst recognized "lineal" champion in the past 50 years, then my vote goes to Leon Spinks. If his criteria includes every single guy to ever hold a fragment of one kind or another, then we're never going to get to the bottom of that heap.

This; although I find the concept of this thread a bit disrespectful...after all, Leon Spinks, despite his limitations, did a damn sight more in boxing than (probably) anybody who uses these boards...

    Bruce Seldon
    Bonecrusher Smith
    Henry Akinwande
    Tony Tubbs
    Francesco Damiani
    John Tate
    Greg Page

Page and Tubbs were talented fighters but hopeless champs.

As champion, Patterson was knocked down 20 times in 8 title defenses. That probably sets some kind of record.

During his 6 years as champion he fought a top 3 contender only three times, losing two of those fights.

He was notorious for ducking meaningful opponents. He never fought Folley or Machen, eventhough they were ranked #1 or #2 for three years of his "reign".

He ducked Liston for almost three years, until it became an embarrassment for Patterson and he finally had to fight him.

I don't dislike Patterson. He was a gentleman out of the ring and a credit to his sport

It was certainly an exaggeration on my part to say he was the worst champion in 50 years.

But in all honesty, he wasn't a good champion, much less an ATG champion.

The presence of Tubbs, Seldon, Valuev, John Tate and Bonecrusher keep Floyd Patterson safely out of the realm of the "worst" Heavyweight champion of the past 50 years.

Even if we went lineal only, I'd rate Leon Spinks and Michael Moorer below him.

His title reign was frankly kind of **** in comparison to many other champions. But his career in whole is significantly better than Spinks and Moorer.
