It is the general consensus that Holmes should have won the Spinks rematch. I saw him fight Oliver McCall around 1995 or so, but can't remember much. Some feel Holmes could have taken that one as well. Never saw him face Brian Neilson, but a few have claimed that Brian got a gift. What are your thoughts?
He was definitely unlucky in the second Spinks fight. McCall did just enough to shade the decision, imo. I never saw the Nielsen fight.
The 2nd Spinks fight and the Nielsen fight were clear cut Holmes wins that were robbed from him by the judges. The McCall fight was very arguably a Holmes win, but I agreed with the verdict. McCall won by 1.
Spinks 2 and Nielsen. But he got the benefit of the doubt against Carl Williams. Pretty much every all time great gets robbed at least once and gets at least one robbery so it usually balances out, except for the occasional Glen Johnson or Pernell Whitaker who only really have terrible luck with judges.
You have a great point, even with Whitaker, he looked to have been beaten by Wilfredo Rivera on the first go around. The judges in this sport have off nights just like the athletes. For every close fight that didn't go your way, you can find one that did. Glen Johnson is a great example of a tremendously rare exception. Boxing balances itself out.
A case can be made that he only lost to Tyson and Holyfield. IMO, he lost very close decisions to Spinks (1st fight) and McCall (by a point). I thought he beat Spinks (rematch) and Nielsen (could have lived with a draw).
I thought Neilsen won the fight. Larry didn't land much and when he did it really didn't stop things or alter the fight. Outworked. Tough to win close fights when facing the house fighter and you're down about 3 rounds at the opening bell.
Larry landed a lot of sharp, clean punches. Even rocked Neilsen early on from what I remember. Neilsen was mainly lunging at Larry with sloppy punches, most of which were blocked. Yes. I thought Larry edged it, close but clear. It took him a few rounds to figure Maurice out, but when he did he was rocking Harris.
I felt Mcall beat Holmes. I remember that fight. I was surprised Holmes didnt win. Holmes did not fight well against Mcall. Mcall was dreadful against Bruno after the Holmes fight.
He had Spinks II and Nielsen (although some scored the 2nd fight in favor of Spinks) going for him. Then again, he could've easily had the Williams and Witherspoon decisions go against him. At that time he had more career momentum going than Spinks II or Nielsen, so you could argue he got a pretty good deal altogether. Of course then there are guys who have every single close fight - and even ones that aren't close - go in their favor, like Ali. It helps being the popular kid that draws $$$.
I know so many judges, personally... They WISH they got paid off like you guys often just assume they are.
