Really? Because the observers in his day saw no competitors black or white who could match him. Godfrey, the best colored fighter of his day, was beaten by Kilrain who was subsequently beaten by him. Jackson only arrived on the scene after this guy had retired. So, who are these colored fighters he was running from?
Sometimes you have to weigh record and contemporary observations when footage is not available. Fitzsimmons' record is one of utter destruction of middles and heavies, usually by KO, and then hanging on too long. It is a record that suggests he was a full level above his contemporaries for quite a stretch.
Now you are living up to your name :hey Any of these guys could step on that precious toe of his and then he is DONE!
When assessing greatness I fully agree with you. When deciding who I pick to win a fight, however, I rely on footage. My h2h list is vastly differing to my atg list.
i get this. fitz is basically a lock for top 10 all time (POSSIBLY top 15) but h2h is based on who would win in a fight and that is very difficult to determine without sufficient footage. newspaper reports can't give you the same idea of style, strengths, weaknesses or subtleties as simply watching a fighter at work
I mentioned earlier that you and I probably agree on 98% of things boxing related. And we probably agree with quite a lot concerning a certain Jack Mormon hobo slugger out of Colorado.
I would argue the exact opposite. That a fighters actual acomplishments in the ring are a far more reliable indicator of head to head ability, than how good they look on film. There have been pleanty of fighters who looked good on film, but didn't stack up in practice. I think that you should have problems with it. Very serious problems indeed!
agreed. just from the little we can see of fitz, i don't see how anyone could pick him vs any of the other fighters talked about here.
it would be tough to based on the footage we have; his greatness is assured due to his resume but i seriously doubt anyone looking at film of fitz, his stance and style, who says "that man there, knocks out holyfield and outpoints ezzard charles"
