Was Clay physically fit for Military duty?

he did...which is why his license was stripped while he officially protested and faced a prison sentence. previously though he was too dumb for the army (honestly i believe that)

 

Clay claimed a conscientious objector status.

He claimed he opposed war for religious reasons.

This is a legally valid justification for not serving in the military if it can be proven.

Three things have to be proven:

1. The person belongs to a religious order which opposes war.
2. The person is sincere in his beliefs. (He didn't just join the church to escape service)
3. The person opposes all war, not just a particular war.

The government conceded points 1 and 2, in Clays case. It said he didn't meet the third criteria.

Clays mouth blew point 3. He stated he would fight in a war that was called by Allah or by the Honorable Elijah Muhammad.
He also stated that "none of them Viet Cong ever called me ******".
This suggested that he would be ready to fight if a Viet Cong personally insulted him.

He was found guilty of draft evasion. The Supreme Court reversed his conviction on a technicality, regarding the DOJ conduct during his appeal. It did not rule on whether Clay was a legitimate conscientious objector.

Originally...he flunked the intelligence test...and was classified 4F...and if he stepped forward when his name was called in 1967...you know he wouldn't have seen active duty...
..he would have boxed exhibitions for the troops...etc.

 

He flunked the intelligence tests when he first registered for the draft and was classified 1-Y.
By the mid 1960s when Viet Nam was heating up, the intelligence standards were lowered and he was reclassified as IA.

He was told that he could choose the base of his choice to be headquartered out of. He would not have to leave the US. He would be teaching GIs how to box and doing boxing exhibitions and he would be allowed to defend his title.

Clay told Sugar Ray Robinson that he wanted to go and get it over with and not ruin his career, but the "Honorable" Elijah Muhammad told him he couldn't.
