It took 3 or more years for Leonard to be certain that Hagler was way past peak.

Boxing back then had a flexible schedule. Even in the 90s it was flexible when you had PPVs and big fights on Friday nights and the ever so popular Tuesday night fights. Back then the dates didn't matter as much as they do now.

hagler wanted to fight leonard when hagler was in his prime. leonard would only fight if it was at 150. leonard then waited until hagler was past it. it was all on leonard.

Yeah, May vs Pac would have been great like 3 years ago but now they are both past their best.

Leonard played such a game with this fight. He waited until Marvin was beatable to fight him. Ray is a great fighter and I think top 10 ever, but with Hagler he waited and even got Marvin to go to Baltimore if I remember correctly in 1982. He gets Marvin to go to Baltimore, and Marvin thinks Ray will accept a fight. Ray says something like "talk about money talk about fort knox" unfornately it will never happen". Marvin was so upset to go all the way there and have Ray say no fight. Then Ray waits and comes back out and fights Howard to get ready for Marvin in 1984 and he retires again. Marvin was at the Howard fight. Marvin fights Hearns in 1985 and then Mugabi after a year rest after Hearns, and Marvin starts to look old. Then Ray wants to fight Marvin. Comes out at a Maryland radio station. After some time to decide, Marvin agrees to the fight and fights Ray over a year layoff and comes in at 158 under weight. and loses. Marvin never fights again, but even after Hearns you could tell Marvin really did not fell motivated anymore. I think for Hearns he reached a level of excitement he never did before and that satisfied him. After that you could tell he really was not into it much, and Ray could sense that and he challenges him.

I guess Leonard picked Hagler at the right time when Hagler is slowing down and took the opportunity.
