A grown man having some guy self-claimed as "Honcho Elijah" telling him what to do. Somewhere along the way he lost the concept of who was in charge of his life.
He was never going to see any combat if he went into army, as he should have He would have toured, visited wounded soldiers in hospitals, and given exhibitions for troops. He was a piece of **** to not go. Nation of Islam supposedly influenced him, but then, wasn't he supposed to be 'Great independent thinker?"
He knew it too, but he preferred to face prison than compromise his beliefs. Whether you agree with his decision , I feel you have to respect it, [unless you are Pepe,] it cost him his prime years as a boxer . Any one here think the Vietnam war was a just one for the US to be involved in?
It didn't have anything to do with the injustice of the Vietnam War. Don't make Ali out to be a champion of right and justice. He wasn't. He did what he did because he was afraid of the Black Muslims.
Or a member of the Ewing family whom Ali colluded with in order to stop JR regaining ownership of Southfork.
I never said he was a, "champion of right and Justice" . I said he was sincere in his beliefs and willing to go to jail for them , rather than compromise and have a cushy time boxing exhibitions. He was afraid of the Black Muslims , but not the US government and prison?:huh The point I made about the Vietnam war is that I think his refusal to serve has been totally vindicated ,as history has subsequently shown. How many professional boxers that served in this war can you name?
Mcvey, Many athletes served in the Military during the Vietnam Conflict, but they didn't go around and celebrate it 'hot dogging it'. They served their country, did their duty and moved on. Many served in Military Bases all over the world, including; Japan, Germany, Thailand, Australia, Hawaii and even Tahiti.
If you wish to believe that you can. Personally ,I 've always wondered why he was the ONLY prominent professional boxer called up?:think
How did Ali "hot dog "it? He had his passport withdrawn and his licence pulled so effectively he could not earn a living in his own country, neither could he earn one abroad . You have a former President of the USA who dodged the draft, anyone get on his case? Ali said he would not serve in any capacity, that he would rather face imprisonment, how is that hot dogging? Can you name another prominent pro boxer that was called up? Or do you think Ali was the only one who fit the criteria?
First off, Muhammad Ali 'lawyered up',,,,,, So don't make it sound like he walked into a courtroom alone, Boxers who served, Mac Foster Amos Johnson Harold Weston Jr. Joey Orbillo Fred 'Preacher' Lewis 'I got no quarrel with the Viet Cong'.............That's not 'hot dogging it'
Ken Norton served.... He boxed exibitions all around the country during the Vietnam war just like Ali would have.
