Mercer vs Morrison. Was that fight proof that Tommy just wasnt gonna make it..?

Morrison was never going to make it, to his credit i believe mercer wasn't a good match up for old Dukey. He had great power and some technique but the disciplline wasn't there. He wasn't a 12 round fighter and his style never evolved past 6 rounds. The media loved him though but he was an Exciting slugger at best, with all the bull**** he carried aside

 

Mercer might have been in his prime, but mentally he was lazy and uninspired. It really wasnt until later in his career that Mercer learned that he needed to come motivated and in shape to ALL fights. His fights with Holmes and specifically Ferguson really screwed him. He could have fought Bowe for the title and shouldnt have lost that fight which he didnt train for and tried to bribe Ferguson during.

 

Looking back it is difficult to clearly identify Mercer's prime.

Morrison was probably his best win. But his best fights were actually defeats, being Holyfield and Lewis.

 

I disagree with those who say that Mercer wasn't prime against Morrison. Watch the battle that he had with Bert Cooper over 12 rounds, or the way he came back from being behind on the cards to beat Damiani, or even the way he took Morrison apart. For me that was a peak Mercer.
