I dont know if they were the best but a solid group of highly experienced,talented men with the serious talent and coming from the boxing school of hard knocks coming from guys on the smaller side of the heavyweight division, not that there were not big guys but it seems like Moore and Charles and Johnson Satterfield and even Lastarza did a lot to eliminate the bigger guys from the # 1 spot ...Walcott was 40's/50's but he is my heavyweight spoiler/puncher of all-time

 

Is it any better than the 70's?

Save for Foster, I think the '50s group were a better lot then the fighters mention above

 

i would say 70's deeper, but 50's were the better

 

If your criteria for rating light heavies is how successful they were at heavyweight , this guy must rank pretty low on your list.

I suppose it depends on whether you think two great lhvy's Moore,& Johnson and a very good one Maxim, are superior to one great ,Foster , and several very good ones Franklin, Conteh,Johnson,Lopez,Gregory,Galindez,Ahumada,Rossman,etc.

For me the 70's was a golden age for 175 pounders,as it was for the Heavies,and lets not forget Moore and Johnson's success was largely against Heavyweights that were on the small side.

 

You said they did nothing at heavyweight , so what? Monzon,Robinson & Hagler did nothing at Lhvy, how do you rate them?

If you are looking at the overall group ,[as I am,] you have Moore Johnson,Maxim . Pastrano did not make the ratings until 1960.

The 70's had
Foster, Conteh, Franklin, Gregory,Galindez,Johnson,that's 6 world champions right there.Rondon & Parlov held belts.
Kates, Hutchins , Burnett, Parlov,Rondon, Finnegan,Quarry,Fourie,Lopez.

Deeper division,imo.

 

I agree this was a special bunch, deep resumes and victory's over the Big men and top light heavyweights as well...How many Big guys did Archie eliminate, Harold had his share and if we throw in Ezzard, who decided to make his bones with the big boys ....70's were good but they lose to these guys..Doug Jones was a terror to the 70's elite

 

Who did Patterson beat at LHvy?
Moore & Johnson may well have cleaned house ,[ though its possible Foster might have kod both,] but in depth I go for the 70's , just my opinion.
