Soto Karass is garbage. Don't be fooled. Maidana is a limited slugger with no brain.

Funny thing is, they trash Mike Jones who already had this guy beat. Yet praise Maidana for showing "improvements" in beating Karass.

I don't know about people saying he has improved a lot, with his newly found arsenal which is the jab and his defense.. But I can't see some dramatic changes.. I don't know, maybe its just me.. :conf

His punch placement has improved but not by much.

He is very sloppy and limited. Fortunately for him, he can be matched very well from now on.

Soto Karass is not garbage, dude...

While I agree that Maidana is an already past prime slugger with limited ring IQ or "skills" to use to change the direction of a fight, he is certainly an entertaining fighter, still a hard hitter (how hard at 147? debatable), and I'd favor him over several ranked fighters at 147, including guys like Malignaggi, M. Jones, Bailey, etc.

He will be matched well against them types as there's only like 3 or 4 guys who are any good at the weight.

Yeah but it took Jones two tries to beat Karass.

Take away half of Maidana's power, put him in 16oz gloves and headgear, and put him in against some of the stylistically cutest, skilled, talented, brightest Amateurs or young pros in the game today, and he'd still find a way to land consistently on them. He may look limited and unintelligent compared to elite fighters, but he has plenty of skills of his own that aren't readily identified by the casual fan. Plenty of fighters can take a good shot and bang; he's gotten to where he has for a reason. And against Karass, he showed visible technical improvements. Your opponent doesn't have to be an ATG for you to demonstrate more dimension.

This is not a claim that Maidana is an advanced ring technician, but a defense against all rugged offensive fighters who get **** on constantly by keyboard critics for having "0 defense" and "no brain" when the truth is so far from that.

I still don't think this weight particularly suits Maidana and I don't want to go overboard in rating a win over Soto-Karass at this point that highly (though to refer to an earlier comment, unlike Jone Maidana beat him in one try, and getting the stoppage was far more impressive than the snoozer Jones put up against a half-blind JSK in the rematch), but it's undeniable that he looked refocused and technically improved in that fight.

Ppl forget when Mike Jones fought him he was never knocked out in his career. Then Rosado knocks him out a fight later at 153. He then fights two weak opponents at 150 and 151 before Maidana.

Soto Karass was far from a good fighter.

Anyone can get a good record if they're a slugger with a decent chin against cab drivers. Maidana is not good. All the best guys he fought he lost to. An old Morales beat him.

He has an entertaining style i'll agree with you. So do most slugger brawler types who go gun hoe without thinking about the consequences.

Alexander beat him, Tim Bradley beats him, Berto beats him, Malignaggi beats him, and i could go on. And Alexander hadn't fought for long at 147. He still lost a UD.

He can beat guys like Carson Jones, Mike Jones and maybe Kell Brook. Limited guys.

    The rest own him.

Why couldn't he knock out Amir Khan? Mister China himself

Why couldn't he beat Kotelnik properly. Kotelnik was a better boxer than him that's why.

He's also a really dirty fighter. He just stopped a guy who's chin got cracked two fights ago.

What are you crying about? So what if everyone on that list beats him? He provides an entertaining fight and never gives up. He has more heart than most people in the game today.

I completely disagree with you about his lack of skill because to me he is clearly a natural fighter.

But why make a thread just to hate on Maidana? Boxing needs more guys like him.
