The problem here is that i know **** all about these fighters and having any logical comparison would be beyond my capabilities

Well your ten guys had a combined 52 losses when they fought Toney, my 10 guys had a combined 221 losses when they fought Robinson. Lets just assume it was a worse run? Yeah Robinson was the welterweight champ at the time. The title wasn't on the line for all of them, but neither was it for Toney.

 

In the last 30 years? The op said "ever". So we just shift the goalposts until your right? If I find someone else then do you say "ok, how about the last 15 years?".

 

Costner was a top contender who was unfortunate to run into Robinson, and even more unfortunate to have his career cut short by injury. Anyone with wins over Gavilan and Ike Williams is a level above the guys in Toney's run.

I don't know too much about the rest, but .500 fighters were not as bad as they are today (relatively speaking). Numbers weren't anywhere near as important, and you had plenty of contenders and even champions with dozens of losses.

 

Ppl could argue that several on the list you mention were also highly touted prospects/contenders themselves.

Time will tell if Bellew is just a fringe contender as were Toney's early decent challengers, but just b/c hindsight may show Bellew to be just that doesnt detract from the Cleverly win, or any of Toney's solid wins either. :good

I know i said 'ever' but yes in hindsight i should have said 'last 30 years' because it would have given me a better chance of being able to compare the fighters mentioned.

 

It was Toney's stock response at the time when he talked about moving up and fighting Holyfield or Moorer - "people don't realise that I weighed 200lbs when I played football...I'm really a heavyweight in a middleweight's body... cheeseburger with extra fries please etc"

I guess how much Toney's legacy is tarnished depends on:

1) When he starting using PEDs
2) What benefit he gained
3) How commonplace PEDs were/are in boxing


Personally I think that he probably lost any benefit he gained by his eating habits and weight fluctuations, and that he was far from the only guy in the era using them. Toney being a slob probably did more to tarnish his legacy than any amount of PED slurs could ever do.
