I really liked Bernard.. But Monzon will win, against any version of Bernard... Too ferocious.. Combine that with a great punch and a very very solid technique and Defense.. Monzon against Hagler... that's would be a more competitive fight.. I'd still pick Monzon..
I just don't think Hop brings anything exceptional to the table to prevent him from falling into monzon's pedantic pattern. Bernard would be circling, and desperately trying to get inside, but, if not stymied by carlos' jab, would find himself tied up and unable to work effectively inside as he would like. Maybe i'm underrating Hopkins here but IMO i cant see him winning this fight, Monzon by clear UD.
Didn't Bhop once remark this was the one mw he didn't think he could beat? Can't remember where I read it unfortunately.
The cagey, later-career champ Hopkins spoils his way to a decision loss. Power and output activity are the reasons he comes up short.
I actually think Hopkins has a good chance here. The one from about the Trinidad fight could use his faster feet to stay away from the right and "just" jump in and out to score. Of course Monzon is a much tougher opponent than Tito. In the end I probably will go with Monzon too but it´s more of a 60-40 type of fight and not too clear who wins. B-Hop get´s sold a bit short here.
I remember McGrain made some epic post (posts?) on this match up a while back, arguing that Hopkins would win. It was an interesting break down. Ah: http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=295180&page=7 I tend to favor Monzon, anyway, but not much in that. Suggesting a stoppage in this one is rather foolish, I think.
