    As per the title, does an iron chin always overcome a huge puncher? What do you lot think?:!:

    Any examples of a big puncher ko'ing someone with a great chin?
    Or a great chin standing up to huge bombs ala Hagler - Hearns?

    good chin and a great fighter means they beat a great fighter and great punch usually. It all depends. Guys like Hagler had chins which were very rare. Marvin stood up to Hearns and Mugabi two fights in a row. After that we knew Marvin had a great chin.

    Probably not the greatest example but going in Simon Brown-Vincent Pettway was seen as great chin/big puncher match up with most people thinking Brown's great whiskers would give him a clear edge.

    We all know what happened here after Brown floored Pettway early, the big punch overcame the great chin to chilling effect.

    The "hardest" punches are the ones you don't see coming.

    Henry Cooper - Ali for example.

    If for example you had to sneeze in the ring against Tua and you closed your eyes for a moment, chances are that left hook would rip your head off.

    The problem with this is that IF the puncher wins then it wasn't a great chin ( usually defined as never being KO'ed) and that 1/2 of the equation gets removed from consideration. This is a tautology as stated. Attempting to show otherwise, by definition, invalidates the conclusion and places it out of the discussion.

    Zamora over Pedroza comes to mind and fits the bill. But it's so rare to see those concrete chin guys stopped.

    And I guess it can be cuts that stop the fight and not a 10 count. Like say Vitali stopping Ross Puritty. He took some major league shots in that fight back when Vitali threw that A#1 right hand of his. How, I don't know but he got hit on the button. It sure busted him up though and a fighters skin has to be able to last also.

    Nope. Sometimes it does, sometimes, especially if the guy with the great chin doesn't have much else going for him, it doesn't.

    See Mosley-Margarito for example. Margarito was a slow target who kept walking into Mosley's shots while being unable to do effective damage himself and being unable to adjust to what Mosley was doing. End result was Margarito being KO'd.

    On the other hand you have cases like Julian Jackson vs Thomas Tate. Tate had a good chin (one career stoppage, that being against Roy Jones Jr where Tate walked into a left hook and was wobbly afterward, although the speed of Jones probably troubled him more than anything) but more than that he could fight defensively, jab, counter Jackson's jab with a decent right hand. The result was that Tate could take a lot of what Jackson dished out, and he could minimize the effectiveness of it.

    Of course, there are a few guys who are freaks and nearly impossible to KO, at least at the weights where they fought in their prime. For example, see Wayne McCullough, Chavez Sr and Marvin Hagler.

    Tua - felix
    A good punch can end everything.

    Even Tua could be finished in one round... ;__;

    I have always been of the school of thought that says the right punch can crack any chin, rather than the right chin can absorb any punch.
