The word legend is bandied about far too readily at times, but Andy Hug was indeed a legend. Here's a short summary of his career achievements : -> The first Swiss national to advance to the world's top ranking in Kyokushinkai Karate. -> The first non-Asian to achieve entry to a world championship final. -> The first non-Asian to become professional world champion in full-contact karate. -> The first karate fighter able to hold his own against the best kick and Thai boxers. -> The first martial arts fighter with a karate background to win the K-1 Grand Prix. Titles won : -> K-1 World Grand Prix Champion - 1996. -> K-1 World Grand Prix Finalist - 1997, 1998. > K-1 World Grand Prix Last 8 - 1994, 1999. > UKF World Super Heavyweight Champion 1994. > WMTC World Super Heavyweight Champion. > WKA World Muay Thai Super Heavyweight Champion 1996. > WKA European Muay Thai Super Heavyweight Champion 1997/1998/1999/2000.
Andy Hug was the man R.I.P! Nobody that I have seen has mastered the Axe kick the way Andy did .Some of the best leg dexterity ever, only HW KB that even comes close was a prime Mirko, and even he couldn't do some of the stuff andy did.
http://www.musashi.nl/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=46&Itemid=84 A lot of great stuff on Andy here. When Andy Hug died, Peter aerts broke down and was crying for hours. He and Andy were great friends despite battling each other several times, with each guy getting the best of the other twice. Hugs rivalry with Mike Bernardo(R.I.P) was also great.
For a while, i was biased against Hug because i felt Hoost was robbed against him but his heart was so tremendous and his fighting spirit which finally got him revenge against Bernardo was so overwhelming you just had to admire him.
A friend of mine had sparred with him in boxing only sparring and was getting the better of him. He said after the round was over, he went to touch gloves and Hug kneed him in the nuts: Another time was in Vegas after the K-1, they went to a club and Andy got so hammered he was trying to dance and hit on my coach's GF.
