Yes Roy Jones COULD beat any fighter EVEN weights ,so much raw talent... But every top fighter COULD beat any GREATER top fighter in a match... But as a bookmaker makes odds on a fight, a ballgame, a horse race, the odds are formulated by this question " who is the most LIKELY to win " ? And so with a Harry Greb, an Ezzard Charles, an Archie Moore, etc, men who went through the furnace of great fighters and prospered over a much longer period...
this is how i look at it, on the balance of probabilities who is most LIKELY to win. if they fought 10 times, who'd win the most? for me, roy would have to keep greb off him with movement for 15 rounds, while being active enough to score points. and as good a hitter as roy was at 160, there is nothing to suggest he's hurting greb. all things equal, both at 160 same day weigh in, it's VERY difficult for even me to come up with a reasonable scenerio in which roy wins...as least one that is more likely than a greb UD
greb is like a black hole. we can't see him, just the opponents he defeated. Jones had great longevity though. a decade at the top is phenomenal.
Greb is probably both a greatly skilled, fast with a very high workrate. Perhaps a great innovators and pioneer of his day But Jones for me the best of all time. Wins with same day or 24hour weigh ins Goto feel for his mother Burt
Jones is not worthy to lace up Greb's boxing gloves, but might he be the ideal foil for him in many ways? Greb relies very heavily upon his speed advantage over his opponents, which is usually a given, but what if Jones is faster? Then things get interesting. Also, great though Greb is, he might not be the person best able to exploit Jones’s main weakness i.e. his durability. In all an interesting contest, and hard to predict.
Come on janitor. "not worthy to lace up Greb's boxing gloves" With the exception of SNV no one is that far above Roy.
Great analogy. I agree, also, with what Bert said above, which leads me to reiterare... Who the **** knows?
Don't be so rigid and closed minded! you don't need film footage of any great or top level fighters there is so much footage of other greats that one need only "cross" record check. see who fought who, how well they did, Reports, circumstances around any loss - questionable or not, weight drained and such things, and last if said fighters stepped up against top fighters out of their own division competing well. all this, and Footage of ones we do see, is proof enough for those top men we can't unfortunately see footage of. Remember too, most old Film Footage was poor NOT the fighters.
