Pushing his rematch with Lopez back? I doubt Victor TRULY wants that fight. Lopez intimidated him just the way Bam Bam used to do. People still picking Ortiz over Rios if they ever fight? Ortiz can't hide behind name recognition now and if Bam Bam will go up to 147 for Pac I'm pretty sure he would do it for a crack at his 'old friend' Victor.
People **** on him for quitting but it was the right decision. Ortiz's career could be over as it is, but if he'd carried on, he would surely have suffered too much damage to be a boxer in the future. I hope he can recover like Jon-Lewis Dickinson did.
If Ortiz didn't retire in that round the doctor would have stopped it due to bleeding from the mouth and risk of his jaw becoming pulvarised. He will be lucky if his jaw can handle the stresses of boxing again... could be a career ending injury. This content is protected Mid 2013 at earliest.
Didn't mathebula had his jaw shattered as well when he fought Nonito? How did he managed to stay in the fight? Or wasn't the fracture as bad as Ortiz?
This is the thing with broken jaws. When Ortiz quit, people said "Ali carried on, why didn't Ortiz?" or some other example. However, a hairline fracture is classed as a broken jaw, as is a break where the bone is literally in two places. Some take a couple of months to fully heel, some will never be strong enough to chew tough food, it really depends. I don't fault Ortiz for quitting at all. If he'd carried on, it would have been a monumentally stupid decision.
Agreed. I gave him **** for it but seeying how dangerous the injury was and still is.. man that must suck. Everyone is giving **** for Ortiz when in reality he did the right thing.
Exactly, I mean I give quitters a lot of **** (Ortiz against Maidana for example) but there are instances where it's just silly to continue, for all we know carrying on could have ended his career and ruined his life for good and i'm glad he fired his idiot trainer. It's incidents like these that help you appreciate trainers who are willing to pull their fighter out to protect them.
His jaw was broken for a couple rounds, wasn't it? It's not like he stopped immediately. He did try to fight on for a bit. And from the evidence, it looks like he made the right decision in retiring. He was supposed to fight on September 15th, remember. And from the shots of him in the crowd that night, his damn face still hadn't recovered. He jaw was hanging off, and people here are still giving him **** for not continuing?
