In order to break up ring training and show techniques in a different light we do the odd session in normal clothing. Gain a new appreciation for Thai and renewed emphasis on things that get overlooked in ring training.

Trained in a hoody and track pants every now and then. Good fun choking someone with their own hood.

Yep. Done this a few times as it was a good awareness training tool for the more "real life" scenarios

I just wear shorts and a shirt. I did JKD for a while, and my trainer didn't like karate and other disciplines (he was a bit to nuts though), but he'd always say "Why do people train in there uniform *gi*... How often do they get in a street fight and are wearing there gi?"
He pretty much said whatever you wear (nikes, cowboy boots, etc), you should fight in. Granted JKD is just self defense and not competition so makes sense. I think some people take the whole realistic thing to far, and others don't take it far enough though.

I hear this all the time from ******ed mma wannabes, theres that and "i train no gi because its better for the street"
its one of the most ignorant things i consistently hear in regards to jiu jitsu.
people have no idea the the things you can do to someone wearing a hoodie or even just a singlet.

at the same time though, the collar is different than what most people wear. So even if you are training for a street fight situation, wouldnt a tee shirt be better? also as far as a hoodie goes, of course you can get into a fight wearing a hoodie if it jumps off fast. but if you have a chance (and dont do this while the guy is anywhere close) you should take off the hoodie. A guy does not need any training to just grab that hoodie and pull it up over your head and start nailing you blind. wearing a hoodie in a street fight is stupid if it can avoided.

the gi is a blend of durability and tradition, you could wear a t shirt if you wanted to but you would be going through a new t shirt every training session.

ehhh depends on how sturdy the tee shirt is...i do think learning 30 different chokes for gi is a bit suspect though for anything other than fighting with a gi. yes i know, it can transfer..but it is an inexact transfer.

Maybe i missed something. Doesn't your last sentence support exactly what the "******ed MMA wannabees" are saying about training no-gi?

Not trying to be an ass. I have never grappled myself so i'm trying to understand this.
