Why was Dempsey so vulnerable to being hit with a right hand?

I was half-joking there. When I say Dempsey hid what I mean is that Dempsey Inc. hid. I don't really think the man was any sort of coward, just the machine (Dempsey, Rickard and Kearns) was very low-risk/high reward and cynically manipulative. I don't think they ever had any intention getting in the ring with Wills. And if you do enough reading, Greb looks to be as big a duck on their part as they chose so many Greb victims to defend the title against.

And, yes, in the ring, he was an animal. He wouldn't need Manny in his ear yelling at him to finish off some guy he had been tenderizing for 10 rounds.

 

You know who had a really nice, and really powerful right hand, considered good enough to be #63 on Ring's Greatest Punchers list?

Mc ,I didn't claim as a heavyweight..!60-70 lbs...Talking about the fact that Carpentier had the reputation of a fast and accurate MW-LH puncher who flattened heavyweights such as Bomb.Billy Wells twice, Joe Beckett,
Battling Levinsky,all bigger than he, with his vaunted right hand...Not my
opinion but the boxing writers of his day who saw him...Of course he didn't have the crunch of top heavyweights, but for his size and time , he had that great right cross...

My knowledge of boxing is miniscule compared to someone with 50+ years of following the sport.

What I do know is that picking Wlad over Dempsey has nothing to with hatred and has more to do with the belief that a good big un beats a good little un.

 

Problem is....Wlad is not good. Dempsey was great. Never bet against prime all time greats unless they are fighting a prime all time great. Wlad is big and built like hercules but this is boxing not a beauty contest. Wlad is a ponderous, predictable, slow, mechanical hwt. True abilities to fight, all time great skills, killer instinct, the ability to fight and never quit all are on Dempseys side of the equation. Fans today really don't know what great boxing abilities are all about. The sport is so watered down that non talents are considers great fighters. Never thought in all my life things would get this bad but it's that bad.

I've been in the ring with great heavyweights.

I've been in the ring with the K Bros.

The K Bros are great heavyweight. I'd rather take on Dempsey then Wlad. He's a ton smaller than me, and I could hit him without fear of a great jab blinding me to a knockout shot.

Do I think I could beat him? No. But if I was offered a million to fight either, with another million in the barrel if I could actually win, I'd take Dempsey to Wlad.

Dempsey is probably the greater fighter, but the Klitschkos are incredibly formidable. Hell on wheels.

 

Yes and No. It depends.


First the No. When Dempsey opted to box, move his head, move laterally, and such he was not easy to catch with the right hand!


Now for the Yes. As a forward moving attacker who carried his left a little low, Dempsey could be caught with right hands. But his goal was to use his power, speed and reflexes combined with savage intent to get the other guy out of there or force an exchange.


Carpentier managed to land a good one and it gave Dempsey a moment of pause on film. Firpo did it. Tunney did it. I forget if Sharkey, though he pasted Dempsey with numerous shots and combinations.


In terms of defense, Dempsey wasn’t nearly as bad as some heavyweight champs before him or after him.


It’s a pity Dempsey did not fight Langford, Wills, Godfrey or Greb in the late teens to early 20’s. Personally I would favor Dempsey in all four matches, though I would give the other guy a chance to upset.
