Twice..And damn near all 3 times..In there first figth Ken broke Ali's jaw in the first round, which went all 15...Norton had great heart when fighting Ali.
He badly damaged Ali once. He was outboxed by him once. And he fought nip and tuck with him once. I'd say one ass beating. Broken jaws hurt. But there wasn't anything remotely that one-sided occurring in the other two, especially the second, which Ken lost handily.
An 'ass kicking' denotes a one sided beating, which did n't occur in any of the three fights between these two. All three fights were close in my opinion. However,I do believe that Muhammad's luck was in when it comes to the third bout. I see Norton as being a close winner in it,but it was nowhere near one sided enough to be labelled as a robbery. My scores are as follows - Fight number one - Norton 7-4-1 Fight number two - Ali 7-5 Fight number three - Norton 9-6
Even that one was hardly an ass kicking. Norton ground out a convincing victory, though. The first part of 1973 produced two major shocks in the heavyweight division.
Norton didn't kick Ali's ass. Far from that. He did however beat Ali all three times IMO. The second fight was the closest but the third was a disgrace decision in boxing. Ali got a gift from the judges because too many people were dependent on the cash cow that he was in the 70's. If he retired after Manilla when it was highly suggested, there would be no Ali vs Norton III.
It would have been marvelous if Muhammad HAD have retired after that fight. Things may well have been very different for him today.
First Fight.......= 8 Rounds Second fight....= 7 Rounds Third Fight.......= 9 Rounds 24 out of 39 Rounds
Neither man every truly beat the other in a decisive fashion. Norton deserved the first fight and Ali the second. The third fight probably could have been deemed a draw.
First fight clearly Nortons and he closed strong more than likely breaking Ali's jaw in round 12. (watch the fight). He certainly kicked Ali's ass in the last round but that's it. Second fight much more competitive but clearly an Ali night. He also closed strong winning the final round handily. Third fight which I attended was extremely close. Nip and tuck. Everyone needs to remember Ali was the champion and in those days you really had to clearly win as challenger to take a title. Rarely did close decisions go to the challenger. I can tell you as an 18 year old I totally despised Ali. I scored the fight live 8-7 for Norton. since that time I've come to realize how great a fight Ali actually was and have a more balanced opinion of his skills and place in boxing history. When I watch the fight today invariably I score in for Ali....again by one round. Close close fight...can't think of another hwt championship bout that was so tough to score.
