Ok so im fairly new to boxing (5 months) and this is my first post on the forums. I really need to know what weight i should get because my 200 pound freestanding punching bag has cracked down the middle of the rod that sticks up. My stats: -5'10 1/2 -73 inch reach -165 pound (no fat at all, probably 6-10% BF) -16 years old -hit quite hard(stationary bag moves about a foot after a few punches) I am going to be hanging it in the garage from a heavy bag stand. So my questions are: 1. What gloves should i get, because mma gloves cut my knuckles and skin between my fingers. ive been using wraps and everlast unpadded "mits" with a metal bar to grip it. 2. will the bag break the stand? and what should i punt on the stand to make it move less? 3.is a stationary bag crap? because it feels like im punching something hollow and makes me lose confidence in my jabs. 4. It seems that boxing has made my shoulders wider, and put on muscle, will i continue to put on muscle? 5.Should i weight train? Thank you for any answers and suggestions in advance, i really appreciate it. :good
16 years old, motivated, get to a real boxing gym ASAP. Worry about your own heavy bag after you join a gym. 100 pounds and up though to answer your question.
thank you very much for the advice , unfortunately i live in a rural area and the closest gym is an hour to 90 minutes away just looking for a bag to mess with while im not in the city
In that case get your gym set up! I would say 100 pounds is ideal for a garage setup. Let me know if you need any tips on hanging the bag.
haha, with the way houses are built here nowadays, my roof will go down in a few minutes, Is a hanging bag more satisfying to hit then a free standing bag, like do your punches feel like they do more damage?
What do people reckon about the free standing ones? Think everlast do one looks like a tube. Thinking of getting one, because i cant hang one, and the ones on stands u csnt move around properly. Nice1 :good
i would say get a hanging one because i just used my friends hanging bag a week ago and was sore as hell after it, definitely works better then a freestanding bag despite the fact that you cant move around it.
Ive had a standing bag since i was 10 and just started to use it at 16, ive never tried a hanging bag except for 1 time last week at my friends house
Well then, wait till you've tried using a bag that can swing 5 feet in any direction. It's the best tool for practicing throwing combinations on the move other than doing mitts and sparring.
