Why was Dempsey so vulnerable to being hit with a right hand?

So Greb was not in line but 4 guys he drubbed, not just beat but whitewashed on the cards, those guys were in line? By what logic does this work? How is it justifiable?

Read the articles posted above. I have more myself that can be added.

Carpentier could land on Dempsey because he was a small, accurate fighter, and Dempsey's defense worked better on bigger men.

Dempsey himself said that he fought like it was a streetfight, meaning he fought to KO his man as quickly as possible.

This is why you didn't see him boxing off the backfoot against Carpentier when he should have.

This is also why Tunney, a smaller, but very accurate sharpshooter had success against Dempsey.

It is also why larger men like Williard succumed very easily to Dempsey's attacks.

Dempsey would actually do better against the current heavyweights than some of the guys that came after him, like Louis, Walcott, and Charles.

In fact, in regards to Dempsey's style of aggressive defense, Haye recently utilized it to destroy Chisora.

You can tell he was studying tapes of guys like Dempsey, Marciano, and Moore.

I've heard that quote before but I've also heard plenty of guys looking for a shot be reverential. I'm not even saying Greb would beat Dempsey, not at all, just that he deserved a shot a hell of a lot more than those who received them.

PP, call me a clown if it makes you feel GOOD. I swear on the Holy Name I have read it, and you sir in different times past would be invited to a duel with me...PP ,I may differ with the opinions of some ESB posters, but I would never dream of calling them a liar...Somehow I am convinced that were Dempsey not a caucasian , you would not base all of your wrath against him...To CALL ME A LIAR ,saying I NEVER READ that GREB quote
is fighting words, though I am not a youngster anymore...Thanks for
nothing sir ! BOILING MAD !!!

I didn't call you a clown Burt, unless you have an alias, I was referring to 'stonehammerjack' making that claim my friend

If you can provide a source I will happily consider it but I believe Greb at least believed in his own ability to beat Dempsey, even if you provided a source I would remain sceptical that Greb believed he'd lose. From his own words in the interviews I provided he said he would outpoint Dempsey unless Dempsey landed a ko punch and that he thought he could avoid that ko punch. Whether that is true in a boxing ring is open to debate

the quotes im seeing is Greb is supposed to have said he could beat dempsey in a 6 round or less fight but anything more and he would lose. All those come from other boxing threads..so not sure.

Look PP, I have been on ESB about 2 years, and I for good or bad was the first one that quoted what a famous writer of Greb's time wrote in a column years later in an old Ring Magazine...Speaking of Harry Greb this writer reported that Greb confided to him that "after 4 or 5 rounds Jack would kill me" .Unquote...Somehere amongst the 100s of old Ring Mags it is probably still there as many old ring mags during WW2 turned to dust because of
the cheep paper used during the war...Why the hell would I lie about my very favourite fighter of all ?Why would I say that Greb would admit this
statement ? My dad who saw Greb demolish Tunney MSG in 1922 first mentioned his name to me when I asked him who was the best fighter you ever saw?" He said Harry Greb..So to call me who was the origin of this quote a CLOWN or liar is hitting below the belt...Read it I DID...Would my favourite fighter the 25 pound lighter beat the 25 pound Dempsey in a 15 round bout ? I just watch Dempsey destroy a Carpentier with devastating punches and no 25 pound lighter fighter could absorb the body blows that a prime Dempsey dished out...There was a reason Dempsey 1919-23 was deemed a "man-killer". He was that heavy handed...

Burt... I somewhat remember that qoute you are talking about...Greb stated he could give Dempsey hell for about six or seven rounds. Then he thought that Dempsey might get to him.
