1. You know with pretty much every other sport there is a time limit, ie you'll get 90 minutes of football or 5 sets in tennis, but a fight can be over in a second (or ten) in boxing. Nothing worse than looking forward to a fight for weeks or months and it's all over in one or two rounds even if your favourite fighter wins, and I've lost count of the times a fight was looking like a 12 round classic in the making and BAM, its all over. 2. In every other sport, the greats (and the good) go out with dignity. No-one will remember Michael Schumacher's comeback, they'll remember his 7 World Championships. Federer could get whitewashed every game next year and he'll still be remembered in his pomp, and for all his Grand Slam wins. Pele ended up in American soccer, but those games never show up on his highlight reels, and Maradona nearly ended up a fat junkie, but everyone remembers the Hand of God. Boxing is littered with good and great fighters that never knew when to quit, or met their match at the wrong time. Think RJJ on his current 'World Tour of Unconsciousness' ©, or Ali going out not with a bang, but with a heartbreaking whimper. Then there are the Watsons and McLellans, cut short in their prime and forever remembered as diminished versions of themselves. 3. The corruption. A great football team can overcome a dodgy referee, but no boxer can overcome a corrupt judge (or three), or a referees long/slow count. We all have our personal 'favourite' bad decision (mine is RJJ in the '88 Olympics), and some take it so personally they dedicate a lifetime to pretending it never happened (yes Klittards, I'm talking to you). Any other reasons why boxing sucks, but you still love it?
In most sports you compete in tournaments, which eventually will pitch the best against the best.. Because they are run by a common governing body.. In boxing it is up to promoters with private firms and selfish interests to make the best fights happen, which doesn't always happen.
A very good reason, I wish I'd included that because I've thought it many times before. I'm puzzled at how people could say the Super 6 was rubbish, I thought it was great.
The reason boxing sucks is because world class athletes are a thing of the past. I mean look at it you can have multiple world champions in one single weight division. How ****ing stupid is that? Plus everyone is lazy and the fights are boring. Look at the Klitschkos (don't care if I spelled it right) are giant, boring, way too cautious and fight absolute nobody's!! A prime Tyson would clear the heavyweight division of today with virtually no effort!! Basically this day in age anybody can be a fighter, anybody can be a singer, anybody can be an actor. The time of working hard at something is long gone.
In most sports you will retire with faculties intact. In boxing, one night can easily leave you in a wheelchair for the rest of you life. But I still love it.
I guess you're too young to remember baseball greats Willie Mays or Carl Yastremski falling as they ran around the bases in their final years. Or washed up quarterbacks who were starters in their primes carrying clipboards as backups. Every sport has stories of guys who hung on too long.
Boxing, overall, is still near the top for me. It's the divas that are at the top, Mayweather, Pacquiao, Donaire that stink up boxing. Pac v May should have happened. Donaire v Rigo should happen. Frankly, I dont care anymore about seeing any of those guys on PPV. Pac v Mayweather could be a stinker anyway. Better fights have happened. Froch v Bute, Rios v Alvarrado, Mares v anybody, Khan v anybody. Broner, Russell, Rigo, GGG, maybe even Quillen. There's plenty of good left in boxing.
One of the reasons why boxing is declining in the U.S and all across the world is the lack of boxing gyms. Blame the government and urban planners for turning land into houses, malls, and schools. Simply put we have too many of them. This is especially true in states where there is abundant amount of suburban homes.
I don't really mind the multiple belts, I think there is too many weight divisions. Also boxers are much bigger and heavier then they are in the past, and the sanctioning bodies needs to relax on the PEDS. Almost every drug is now illegal to take, combined with the terrible economy, this is the current state of boxing.
The diluting of the the World Championship with ridiculous ABC belts, silver, super and mickey mouse titles, is by far the most annoying thing. Weight division dont bother me as long as fighters dont use them as an excuse to duck good challengers. Clearing out a division will always be more impressive than skipping up a few pounds and winning another abc title. it is the most aesthetically pleasing sport for me, which has plenty of history and is truly global. Plenty to like. Can be **** though.
