Why was Dempsey so vulnerable to being hit with a right hand?

When he was alive and asked about Jack. he said, he would fight Dempsey, but only 6 rds, after that Dempsey would kill him. That is a DIRECT quote. But don't let a little thing like the facts stand in the way of your diatribe against Dempsey little *****. And to Burt, Sorry to get you drawn into my argument Burt, but some of these kids are punks. They hate Dempsey, but love Tyson, who loved Dempsey. Go figure

Some posters do have a visceral distaste for Dempsey...It is out of
proportion to the facts...They believe ONLY what they WANT to believe ,and screw the considered opinions of great writers, boxers and trainers who saw with their own eyes, the prime Dempsey who wrecked havoc in his time...What A Sam Langford said about Dempsey, a Ray Arcel,
a Hype Igoe, and the hundreds of neutral boxing experts who were polled
in the 1950s,and by a vast majority voted Dempsey the best HWT up to that time...This means zilch to some posters who demean Jack Dempsey
so, so many years later...People by the thousands who saw Dempsey
1919-23 knew a helluva lot more than people of today that deny his true unique qualities and innate toughness... Was he the greatest HW ever ?
Who knows, but in a H2H encounter Dempsey in his peak was an animal
    for dang sure...Cheers...

The levels people go with their bull****. It's not going to matter if you pull it up. You can't embarrass someone who already has no shame.

    Burt,

What makes you so confident Dempsey was the greatest head to head fighter in heavyweight history if he didn't even defeat the two best heavyweights of his own era? Harry Greb and Harry Wills. Say what you want, but Dempsey is unproven at the very top level.

Did I not say that Dempsey was an "animal" H2H...Look at my post above...Have i not said to the question if he was the best heavyweight ever ? WHO KNOWS...How can anyone ,I included say who was the best heavyweight ever H2H.? But I will say that Dempsey according to what I have read in over 50 years of studying the opinions of great boxing minds
have cited him as possibly the best HWt H2H because of their observance oh him fighting in his prime...I take the words of experts who saw the peak Dempsey fight as closer to the truth than of some ESB posters who constantly look for threads to belittle his unique qualities he certainly had.
ONE other thing this baloney that he didn't ultimately fight Wills, or MW Greb, or John L Sullivan, nor Lady Ga Ga, nor Jimmy Wilde , nor Joe Grim, nor Herbert hoover, etc doesn't detract from his abilities one whit...
He was a great hitter and tough guy and though he didn't meet the
top Hwts that other champs did, he beat in his prime everyone he fought 1919-23, and today would as Ray Arcel stated. "have a picnic "...
P.S. And I am convinced that if Dempsey HAD beat Harry Wills and Harry Greb, he would still be a target for some posters of today....

If Dempsey was such a man killer from 1919 thru 1923, why were 4 of his 6 bouts against guys Greb had already beaten? But no Greb.

And why are we to dismiss Tommy Gibbon's quote after his bout with Dempsey where he stated that "Dempsey is not the mankiller he is made out to be," suggesting Dempsey relied on help from the ref to win?

Suzie sums it up perfectly. He wasn't tested at the highest level of his own era.

To cite an extreme value think to how much of a man killer zab judah looked before fighting the best in his division. "whittaker with 1 punch power" I remember him being called. But then he fought the best that 140 had to offer and suddenly didn't look as good any more.

S, you can have your own opinions, but you CANNOT have your own FACTS.
Gempsey won a decisive decision over the defensive minded Tommy Gibbons...Now that is a fact in their 15 round bout under a broiling sun in Shelby...
P.S. What defeated fighter has not dismissed their opponent who beat them ? Of course Gibbons was bitter...He made no do re mi after losing the 15 round bout...And one more thing S, Tommy Gibbons was a GREAT defensive fighter who was NEVER kod in 106 bouts until his LAST bout when at the age of 34 Gibbons was stopped by Gene Tunney...I have watched a great clip of Gibbons koing Jack Bloomfield in London, and
Gibbons could punch...Digest the fact, though it may pain you,Dempsey
was a great fighter at his peak...An earlier and bigger version of Roberto Duran, snarl and all...Cheers

Let's say that Greb did say that Burt.

He also said the opposite numerous times.

He had a long career and I think at the end, one-eyed, starting to slip, he knew Dempsey would beat him although he still pursued the fight. He pursued a fight with Dempsey for even longer than Wills.

The point is, if he said this, what are we to make of it? Do you take him at his word? Do you, then, take him at his word on all the occasions where he said he might best Dempsey, that he felt he was too fast for him? If Greb said six times on the record that he could beat Dempsey and once that he could not, why do you believe him when he said he could not? And do you accept that he may have thought he could not in '24 but that he could in '22?

Addendum : I have read an article that Gibbons said after the bout I "had bumps and bruises " wherever Dempsey hit me after the fight...Finito...
With Dempsey you and others come up with one negative after another when you wish to belittle his considered abilities...I, were I as biased against some fighter I didn't like could find as many negative things to say against this fighter ad nauseum, if I wanted to, but I admire every fighter
who risks their health in a ring...
