center ring is where Tommy was the best . I think Curry is a tough fight for Tommy and it would be tense. But Tommy was such a sharpshooter. Many people will compare McCrory to Hearns, but Milt only had a 72 inch reach for a guy 6-1. Hearns is nearly 79 inches, and Tommy was strong up top and just a better fighter. Much better.

Tommy's best asset was his speed. His jab and right and how he worked the body up and down. When he was younger and at welt. his power was so great and his speed so good that he could pick apart anyone, The fact Leonard beat him was because of Ray's great speed and defense and heart. There is only one Leonard. When Tommy got older after the Hagler fight, he started to work the body more and he became more of a complete fighter on the inside, which compensated for his speed and power diminishing a little.
But at welt and superwelt, Curry would have trouble with Tommy. Curry was not faster than Hearns and Tommy would work him up and down and swell him up since Donald could not get on his toes and box away from Tommy. Tommy would not take a stupid chance since he would know and feel how fast Donald was and not want to get counterpunched. Donald would be trying to pick Tommy apart with his own jab and trying to counterpunch, but with Hearns he would be in there with a guy just as fast and with that right and reach. I doubt Tommy could knock him out like he did Shuler, so it would be a matter of how swelled up or cut Donald was by the late rounds and stoppage by TKO.
I think Donald would make it interesting early, but I don't think he could hang with Hearns that long taking the punches. The guys who did well against Hearns were aggressive, not necessarily the better fighters. Tommy usually fought great against the fast counterpunching top fighters like Curry. Tommy was an enigma. Guys like Barkley who were aggresive did better than guys like Benitez. If you sat back and counterpunched with Tommy he would win. Just ask Virgil Hill.
