Wilder's opposition has been pretty crappy, but only 2 were smallish or former cruiserweights, most were in great shape, and many had serious power. Not great skills, but power nonetheless.

The difference in skill is huge. Look at a 22 year old Wlad destroying 3 time HW belt challenger Axel Schulz some 14 years ago and look at Deontay Wilder look sloppy when beating up 265 lbs cab drivers in godforsaken Alabama casinos.

'starting to break Wilder down' must be an understatement. Wlad would be absolutely raping Wilder every day. Being the nice guy he is Wlad probably felt bad about it and came up with that chocolate cake for Deontay's B day

^Agreed, he seems like a funny guy. When he came over here to do the press for the Haye fight, everyone who came into contact with him said what a nice, funny person he was.

When will the hype for this bum beater extraordinaire ever die down?

If someone like Seth Mitchell can be fighting for a potential title next year, then there's no excuse for Wilder not to be. That is, if he's as good as advertised. After all, they're both late starters, both around the same age, both started fighting in the same year, and they're both at 25 fights apiece. The difference is, Wilder at least has some decent amateur credentials to his name. So why the hell is there such a vast gap in their quality of opponents??

 

promoters.....mitchell has been with golden boy for a while

deontay just got a big promoter. and had his first step up vs a dude that isn't great in Manswell but is much better than what he was fighting and along the lines of the dudes Price has been fighting. they expect him to start fighting top 25 opposition next year.

Wilder has been with GBP for a while, and that "step up" fight against Manswell? That was another bum they picked up on 2 weeks notice.

 

Manswell was so worthless, and so embarrassing, they literally should have just called the fight off.

I guess Wilder wanted it anyway, to make a few extra bucks for his daughter's serious medical bills. You really can't blame him. If I were his management, I would have just given him the money & called it off.

 

Wilder's camp seem to want to follow the Michael Grant strategy, but that's not a great ploy for his career. He has talent but also has huge technical gaps and needs to address them. Sparring against elites definitely could help, but he also needs to step up in class.

 

Also, why is Mitchell slowly getting the attention of HBO (see http://www.eastsideboxing.com/2012/2-days-seth-mitchell-premieres-sat-oct-27-on-hbo/ ) and Wilder is boxing in front of 500 drunk people in shabby hillbilly casinos.

Seems to me Mitchell's handlers are way more professional and serious than Wilder's.

 

He could easily end up like Jameel McCline. McCline had decent skills, was a sparring partner for a lot of the top HW's, so he had great sparring experience....but come fight time he always choked against better opposition.

Funny that McCline and Wilder are in Wlad's camp together.
