The OFFICIAL MARVELOUS Marvin Hagler DESERVES MORE RESPECT than everybody thread

With so much discipleship of lesser boxer's on the forum...it has been determined that HAGLER, the greatest warrior of the modern boxing era...shall have a thread where his unparalleled toughness and legendary career are reflected on, praised, and discussed.

don't know about the greatest. i have robero duran and leonard pretty high also. holyfield was great, mayweather is on his way.

but he is definitly my favorite fighter

 

The most feared fighter of the early to mid eigthies until the arival of Mike Tyson. He beat Duran, Hearns and arguably beat Leonard as well, though not officially. But you need only look at that fight to see the respect and fear that this great fighter comanded in that ring.

Leonard was a bad ass, but not in this patricular fight.

 

Absolutely. Hagler was THE natural MW. Leonard the aging natural WW had brass ones just to get into the ring with this guy after years being retired. I said in a prior thread that I thought it was a draw, which probably would have been the fair decision, historically speaking. Hagler was an out and out monster. ATG x 10.

 

Agreed, except about Sugar Nose Leonard's stones. He lost them, at least for that fight. I was a real Ray fan in my youth. I liked both fighters actually. I just wanted a good fight, however only one man came to fight. I think Marvin should have spent time with Mickey Goldmill chasing the chicken, that way he might have caught Ray.

In contrast, I am a fan of both Peter and Toney...they went 24 rounds, and I never stopped liking either.

Hagler had one of the greatest jabs ever.

 

I think Hagler should've attacked Leonard like he did Hearns.

Maybe he didn't have that in him at that stage in his career. He looked pretty slow and also much easier to hit in his last two fights.

 

Yeah, but Leonard was the naturally smaller guy (Hagler was built like a truck), who hadn't fought in years, had a detached retina. Basically, Leonard was very smart. He knew he couldn't possibly outbrawl Hagler (only Hearns was stupid enough to try that). It was a hell of a technical show from Leonard, and really the only way he could avoid getting ktfo.

 

I have to give Hagler credit for making Hearns brawl, rather than Tommy simply fighting the wrong fight.

When Tommy tried to outbox Hearns, Hagler would apply the pressure and rough him up. In the middle of round 1, Hearns was having some success boxing from the outside and landing some rights, but Hagler was able to corner him. By the time Hearns got off the ropes, his legs were doing a dance, and they weren't the same after that.

I've never seen a guy change from his usual style to such perfection against such a quality opponent as Hearns, as Hagler did in that fight.

 

Hagler just had it all, he could adapt to anything: go southpaw, orthodox, box, brawl, it didn't matter. A master.

 

Hagler was a beast, and a great fighter. However, I was always more of a SRL fan. A fan of them both, but SRL is one of my favorite boxers ever.

 

Hagler was really good, really tough, and avoided like the plauge for years. As a result, Marv was forced to fight other guys no one else would fight. Willie The Worm Monroe, Eugene Cyclone Hart, and Bobby Boogaloo Watts were responsible for much of Marvins scar tissue and wear and tear.When the smoke cleared, all of those aforementioned Philly tough guys were gone and all that was left was the battered body of Hagler. The rest of the division, guys like Vito Antuofermo, Alan Minter, Mustapha Hamsho, and John Mugabi, weren't all that historically speaking. By the time Hagler got his big fights, with Duran, Hearns and Leonard, he was on the slide.
Except for the Hearns fight, Hagler was less than stellar against the elite, but through no fault of his. If Marv had the luxury of the perfectly orchestrated career like most other fighters, he wouldn't have had to ruin himself to get to the big money, and his all time standing would have been better IMHO.

 

Agreed. Leonard was just so naturally gifted and seemed to always pull out the big victory in a spectacular way.

 

Power, great boxer, able to switch up stances ... could break anyone down.

I think he beat SRL fair and square but got robbed because Leonard had a bigger name.

The best true middleweight i'd ever seen and so many title defenses as unified champ.

him and monzon would be an arguement for the best middleweight ever !!

I'm talking about middleweights who fought most if not all of their career at the weight.

 

I'm a big fan of Hagler. All heart and grit, great skill, and an absolute hell of a chin thanks to that stocky build.
