This is the same sister who apparently just confirmed he has died. Chad Dawson and Johnathon Banks, both trained by him (Chad no more admittedly) have said he's passed. The Klitschkos say he has then remove it. Lampley apparently calls Steve Kim and confirms it. This is a shambles. Poor Manny and the Steward family.
2:38PM EDT October 25. 2012 - The family of Emanuel Steward, the Godfather of Detroit boxing, has asked for prayers and comfort as the 68-year-old boxing icon recuperates from surgery. "At this point, I'm asking EVERYBODY to LEAVE US ALONE so that we can comfort and communicate with Emanuel," Steward's sister Diane Steward-Jones emailed to the Free Press on Thursday. "His surgical team just dropped by and scoffed at the reports he is dead." Citing friends of Steward, the Free Press incorrectly reported earlier today that Steward was dead. The Free Press regrets the error, and we apologize to the Steward family. Steward nurtured and guided the likes of Thomas Hearns, Hilmer Kenty and Milton McCrory to world titles in the 1980s at the Kronk Gym on McGraw in Detroit. He has been hospitalized since September and underwent surgery for what his sister called diverticulitis, a stomach disorder. A prayer vigil was held Sept. 23 in Walled Lake, Mich., leading those concerned to believe the illness may be more serious. Brudenell writes for the Detroit Free Press
Boxing seen (sic) reporting that Manny's sister has just confirmed he has died within the hour. Sigh.
Man, he just sort of defined boxing in the era I was raised and in which I came to love the sport. I feel kind of adrift and certainly sad. I will be raising a tall one to him. RIP
Manny and I were more casually friendly, but the man's spirit and love of boxing were forces of nature. I'm utterly heartbroken. I hadn't called the guy in months. Feel awful. Let's all drink to Manny tonight, and send up our prayers if you believe in that sort of thing.
What makes this worse than some of the other boxing deaths is Steward wasn't a bad guy at all, almost every interview I've seen of him has been a positive contribution to Boxing. He genuinely was one of the good guys. Kinda hard to take that this could happen to a man on top of the world who isn't risking his health. It's a fukin travesty, that's all.
