You have a genuine talent whose style is not fan friendly, is not white, Mexican, black American or Filipino, speaks mainly Spanish, is not a great looker ala DLH, and is in a lighter weight class. He is also in his 30's so his shelf like is not long. The only way I can see him being an attraction is to fight in Mexico and try to reach out to the Mexican people, maybe even be naturalized there.
Pacquiao, Donaire, or JCC Jr. under cards against top 10 opponents, particularly those who might give an exciting fight via competitive nature or one sided blowout. But, an overall theory would be; just fight the best competition available.
It's hard like you just mentioned,he has many things against him.Age,no fan friendly style.I like & highly respect him just don't expect Mexicans to follow him anytime soon at least not the majority they're used to & like barn burners hence rios/alvarado,morales/barrera,castillo/corrales ect.Hate to say it but it' the truth.Only way would be to fight/beat nonito & put him with the best from there.
An 80% stoppage ratio isn't fan friendly? That is a new one. We can all go nit pick any boxers resume and say, hey this fight was boring. Anyhow, if I was his handler, I would quickly turn him into the Mexican Assassin. There are plenty of Alphabet soup rated Mexicans around 118(which he could make) and 122. He would have already feasted on Terrazas, Arce, Montiel, and Mares, if Golden Boy dared serve him up, if I was promoting him. We would fight down in Mexico frequently also, to build up his notoriety. Throw in a more formidable guy like Agbeko, or Moreno, also to solidify the resume, and show well roundedness. If I was promoting Rigondeaux, both him and Donaire would make more money by the time they fought, because it would be a real super fight, due to the way I built Rigondeaux resume up.
They wouldn't have a choice but to acknowledge his style, if he went down to Mexico, and KO'd Arce, Montiel, Terrazas etc. He would destroy those guys. He drops guys with one shot in every fight. I don't see a Mexican down there, that has the size, skill, style, and chin to give Rigondeaux any issues.
Do you guys even think before you make some of these comments? How is a style where he drops every single opponent, and has an 80% KO/stoppage ratio not fan friendly? Sure the two fights that went the distance weren't thrillers, but we can nit pick any top level guys resume and find fights like that. Pac's fight against Clottey when Clottey wasn't bouncing lead right hands, or uppercuts off Pac's face was extremely boring. Watching Pac create 12 rounds of air conditioning against Bradley wasn't exciting either.
The way he goes about getting those stoppages isn't fan friendly. His compatriot Gamboa has most of the same problems but people have no problem watching him fight. But yeah, I'd love to see him vs Agbeko or Moreno, and build to a superfight with Donaire.
Style really doesnt matter Mexicans will still watch. I'd hype him to be "Mantequillita" a mini version of Napoles if I promoted him. Getting involved with the media and fans they crave that. Just like Maravilla is winninf many Mexican fans Rigo easily, easily should have a shitload of fans. But I think contractual disputes make promoters take a step back from promoting these guys like they should just look at Gamboa's case thats sad. Abril believe or not has potential I know alot of Rios fans are alil butthurt lol, and dont like him but Abril says he's more Mexican than Rios. Simply connecting with the fans doing charity etc you will make friends and connections in high places eventually you find out they are fans too and you keep working hard winning and it wont be long till you see your face on a billboard. Germany would love fighters like Abril and Rigo too.
Agreed on the charity work. I think if Rigo were to make the rounds at hospitals, doing exhibitions in public, etc, he would get a bigger following.
Arum needs to put him in with better opposition.. If he wins, he can be promoted as a great 'boxer'. Put a couple clinics on 'brawlers' and get more recognition since 'brawlers' is what casual fans like. If he loses a lot against better opposition, wasn't meant to be.. Getting tougher opposition is the key, and I doubt it's Rigondeaux's fault he hasn't been in with any yet..
Maravilla wins many Mexican fans because of his style and attitude Neither of which Rigo is similar in
He has technical boxing ability, and has one punch power. I don't fault him for not being a no defense having face first brawler.
