Since Ali is regarded by most people here as the greatest heavyweight of all time, speculation about who might have beaten him is inevitable. We have all heard the obvious suggestions such as Jeffries, Johnson, Dempsey, Louis, Marciano, Holmes, Tyson and Lewis. How about some less obvious suggestions? Can you find another Ken Norton, i.e. a fighter who is not in his class as a heavyweight but has the style or tools to beat him?
Jeffries: No. Johnson: No. Louis: No. But would fare far better than the above two IMO. Marciano: No. Ali might well stop Marciano. Holmes: Maybe, but I'd fancy Ali go get the better of the battle of the jabs Tyson: No. Not going into it again. Could go anywhere but gut says Ali. Lewis: Maybe. Ali was quicker and could well outmove Lennox, but Lewis had a great jab, heavy hands, but again I think Ali would beat him to the jab and was quicker of hand and foot. I'm going for Thad Spencer.
Nice topic, perhaps Jersey Joe would be one of my first picks. He has good power to keep Ali cautious but has the style to really trouble Ali and give him something to think about.
This is the kind of pick I am looking for. A fighter who is outside the top 10, like Ken Norton, but has the style to potentialy pull the trick. Be bold.
Because he could jab with Ali. Also, Ali had trouble with textbook counterpunchers, elite fighters with handspeed who didn't make many technical mistakes. Ali won't be able to throw johnson off his game, because johnson always remained calm, textbook, and compact. Johnson loses this fight because Ali would find a way to win, but not before he gets dazzled by johnsons boxing expertise.
Checkout this Janitor Johnson beats a top rated fighter(who had just gone 10 nearly even rounds with Muhammad Ali) by 15 rounds to ZERO in one of the best boxing displays in ring history [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJNPbZ_4ayY[/ame]
\Wrong Flea, Clay?Ali , never saw the day he could beat the Joe Louis of the Max Baer fight...Ali could run but he couldn't HIDE...Louis in his prime utterly destroyed everyone, whereas Ali lost to Norton, dropped by a Henry Cooper, lost and dropped by Joe Frazier, and had to use RopaDope because he didn't punch hard enough to keep men off him...If Ali was not controversial and colorful, his reputation as the "greatest" would not have existed as it is today... Brave yes ?... An all around great fighter as Ray Robinson or Ray Leonard ? No. Would Ali beat a dynamic young Joe Louis. ? NAY...
Of course i respect your opinion BB but to use an example of a Prime Louis against examples of a non-prime Ali is hardly a level playing field. Its no more different than me citing the Louis who was bounced around by Schmeling against the Ali of the Terrell fight
