I can't help thinking that MW hasn't busted **** here. He's giving an opinion that's very much in the minority.
In fact,I don't think I've heard this before. Are we to believe that Ray went through a whole camp with his team in the knowledge that he had no intention of sticking to the gameplan and just humouring everyone?

I agree in part, but his versatilty was what made him great. He needed to fight slick to beat Duran and that was the beauty of having the option to fight in different styles.
I love his performance in the first fight, but it wasn't going to get the job done, and his team knew it.
His pride got the better of him.

He didn't slug it out with Benitez and he didn't slug it out with most of his opponents. Over the course of that fight, he broke Benitez down gradually and stopped him late. Neither one of those guys were sluggers. Leonard was just a boxer with a lot of power who was able to put combinations together when the time was right.

I never implied that Leonard was a runner and I don't view fighters who choose to box as runners. He usually kept distance and boxed from the outside. That's why he had problems with Hearns in their first fight. Hearns was a bigger guy with a longer reach, so Leonard had trouble when Hearns decided to box and move.

Why didn't you talk about the other Leonard fights that I listed?

Didn't Leonard say that he fought like that because of how Duran talked abou his family? Also Leonard said that he knew he lost the fight. I never heard him say that he thought he won the first fight.

Initially, throughout training camp and up to the fight everybody on Ray's team including himself believed he was the bigger, faster and more powerful man. They firmly intended on holding the center of the ring and knocking Duran out. Dundee even predicted it would happen inside of four rounds, at that. Ray fould out pretty quickly Duran wasn't just the rugged, come-forward brawler they thought him to be, but was actually incredibly difficult to hit with clean, hard shots which Ray was only capable of generating when he planted and set his feet, unlike the other Sugar who threw 'power flurries' on a whim and could KTFO you moving backwards. Duran also happened to be in supreme condition and incredibly motivated on that night. He hurt Leonard on a single, counter left hook from outside and feinted his way in to close distance, Leonard reacting to every twitch and movement. He had his soul by the second round. Was Leonard physically capable of switching tactics from that point on? Likely, but Duran was on him like flies to ****.

I was hoping you'd see this thread.
I'll need to have a look through my stuff but I can't remember if it was Janks or Angie who I read about being worried that Ray would forget about the gameplan, get stuck on his combos and let Duran draw him in.
Can't remember the exact quote but it was something about not standing still with combos and moving after three punch combos.
You do stats and history better than me so I've no intention of contradicting anything you've said.:nono

I think Leonard fought Duran's fight. Leonard admits that himself.

There's an argument for MW, but Leonard always threw hard and flashy combos. The real difference between this fight and it's alternative was how Ray moved his feet.

He tried his best to force benitez to trade at evey opportunity. He stood toe to toe in most of his fights banking on his superior skill and athleticism.

I suggest you watch the benitez fight again.

Leonard 9 times outta 10 preferred to pound his opponents. He was not in any sense the cute boxer he was in the 2nd fight. By his own words he tried to emulate Frazier

Interesting view, shortly after the fight and prior to the rematch... 2:35

    Pacman KOs both.

SRR had bad chin, Pacquiao has ATG left straight hand, would KO SRR

Duran cant deal with Pacman in and out movement. Pac has range finder jab to keep duran punching air. Pac KO round 9.

Pac can Jab, hook (clottey), uppercut, left, rignt

All SRR can do I haymaker with power, but no speed. Pac can take advantage with ATG speed. Robinson has no chin. Pac took Margarito punches no problem.
