Was Tyson really a great puncher, or just a fast/accurate puncher?

So I was having a discussion in YT with one of those nostalgists who think boxing died after the 80's and Larry Holmes was the last great HW champion.

Naturally, he also thinks Earnie Shavers is the hardest puncher ever and Tyson is a featherfisted creampufff compared to him.

    Some quotes of his:

Whether if Tyson punches harder than Shavers or not, it's matter for another debate, but what do you think

    Is Tyson's power overrated?

Was Tyson really a great puncher, or just an average puncher with very fast hands and great accuracy?

Did he have one-shot KO power like, let's say, a David Tua, or maybe his power only came from fast/accurate combos?

Should Tyson be expelled of the ATG punchers list ?

You could argue that being fast and accurate is what makes a great puncher. No good being heavy-handed if you can't land.

The 1st knockdown of Holmes came with a single shot if i'm not mistaken, the only difference was tyson could finish holmes in that round where as shavers couldn't.

Mayweather is as fast and accurate as they come, yet he is considered featherfisted in his division

Yeah, a bit of both. He was a fairly heavy puncher, a quick handed guy as well.

Where is the option where he is above avg for accuracy and ridiculous in power. Mike has God gifted power and got great speed in his punches too. One of the few boxers that i know that is equally powerful with both hands.

He was a fast accurate explosive puncher with great raw power. That all added up to a phenomenal cocktail of devastation.

He was absolutely a harder puncher than Shavers, I don't care what any of their common opponents say. It's evident from the way his opponents went down (and stayed down, unlike many of Shavers's opps) as well as his far greater body of one punch KDs and KOs against legit heavyweight opposition.

The whole, "Tyson wasn't a one punch KO guy, he was a combination puncher" mantra is a tired old bit of nonsense that has no real truth behind it but which is continually wheeled out by certain boxing fans who either want to downgrade his power at the expense of another, usually older, fighter, or who lack the ability to think for themselves and have to resort to echoing the words of others to support their argument.

His KO of Botha is about as clear an example as you can get of one punch completely turning around the tide of a fight.

Yes you could tell how massive his power truly was by watching him blast out, little guys, old guys, scared guys. and out of shape guys. One of the greatest bum blasters of all time, thats for sure.

You could tell how massive his power was by watching him blast guys out period. Rag on his opposition if you like (that's more relevant to an argument about his general standing than anything) but he more often than not destroyed the men that were put in front of him, and did so in a way that left no doubt that he was hitting them very, very hard.

No one can knock out top quality opposition every time out. List any renowned puncher and you'll more than likely find all manner of less than stellar opposition on their stoppage list. Louis, Marciano, Dempsey, Liston, Foreman, they're all guilty of taking on people like the above at one time or another.

I'm pretty sure Shavers hit harder in terms of pure power Tyson hand speed and accuracy made his punches even more powerful but I think Foreman and Shavers hit harder in terms of pure power
