I think you've got to split the single/double title era from the multi title.... and also the increased number of weight divisions too.

You'd have had to have beaten some damn good fighters to get there, and also some damn good fighters to remain champion.

These days you can almost skirt your way around the leading names to become a mando, beat the weakest ''champion'' out there and then defend against the weakest opposition that your organisation will allow.

A lot of ''champions'' would barely make it past their own continental level in the previous eras, I'm sure.

If a modern fighter wants to crack those lists he's got to do something special, either be dominant at a weight for a long period of time - Calzaghe didn't really do this despite being champ for ten years - or build a great record across a couple of weights.

The list of fighters that Calzaghe actually fought is probably weaker than the list that he didn't fight, taking into account ability and availability at that particular time.... across 160, 168 and 175.

Likewise Hatton across 135, 140 and 147, and obvously Naz too.

The only fighters in this era that have genuinely fought almost everyone are DLH, Mosley, Pacquiao and at a push Marquez. Froch is getting there, over a pretty short timespan his list is impressive.

Obviously DLH didn't fight Winky or Forrest, but it wasn't as if he was fighting turds in their place, Mosley didn't fight Tito, Marquez didn't face Morales.

 

I'm happy for a good few solid scalps and one brilliant one when ranking Brits, because we don't have the Benny Leonards, Ray Robinsons, Harry Grebs of this World.

Fitz is one of the ATGs but I don't consider him a British fighter of course

 

the same can be said of lennox lewis i suppose, who ive included in my top 10.
what about a top of british fighters who never won titles ie nal tarleton and alan rudkin plus herol graham

Me too - but clearly it's got to be taken into context.

Plus, I factor in performances in losses when ranking a fighter. Obviously they didn't win, but (say) in Graham's case, arguably beating Mike McCallum gives you an indication as to his ability, more so than wasting a Tocker Pudwill, an ancient Freddie Pendleton or HBO hypejob Michael Grant.

Lewis has got to be right up there.

It's easy to say ''he didn't have a defining fight'', but when you've beaten as many top fighters as he did they all kinda blend in to each other.

His best wins for me were against Golota, Ruddock and Morrison...

I do, because I have 'skillset' as part of my criteria and the best way to judge that is how they acquit themselves in their most important bouts. Hence why I have Rudkin>Graham.

I think turnpinr was talking about how Lennox might not be British. He flew the flag and came through the domestic ranks. Fitz was a Kiwi/Australian who was an American citizen at the time of his greatest victory (Corbett, although I hold the win over Nonpareil similarly high)
