Who is the most under rated fighter that you have ever seen?

I don't think Virgil Hill gets enough respect. He was a very good fighter.

 

I agree mate.Kalambay is very underrated and my only problem with him is that I was younger when watching him and found him to be boring in my naievete.

Great shout mate.I'm always championing Virgil's cause and keep meaning to do a thread about him and some other quality LHWs from that era.
History hasn't been as kind as it should've to Virgil Hill,Prince Charles Williams and to a lesser extent,Bobby Czyz.

 

Yeah the defeat to Hearns really hurts Hills legacy, but if you watch him in his prime it's clear he was a very skilled guy.

What's sad, is that he's mostly remembered for that Jones bodyshot.

 

Probably the 3 things he's most known for are that, the loss to Hearns, and the loss in a unification match to DM.

A bit of a shame as he was a good fighter. Made about 20 defenses of a title and beat some respectable opponents along the way. Only lost to the best up until he was way past it.

 

I always love the story Freddie tells when he was in the gym,and Virgil was sparring someone(forget who) and all the attention was on the other guy.No one helped Virgil between rounds so Freddie took some water to him,and a great friendship was born.

Sometimes I think being a talented,natural light heavy is the equivalent of being born into poverty.
Some marvellous fighters haven't got the recognition they deserved because they were born to fight at 175.
I feel it's what caused the problem for Roy's legacy.

Buddy McGirt is another that springs to mind. One of the most technically proficient fighters
of the era, but had the misfortune to run into Taylor (whose speed was McGirt's achilles heel), and Whitaker.

These days, he seems to be remembered more as a trainer than a guy who was regarded as top 5 p4p at his best.
