I mean, what makes them so great at amateur boxing?

they eat, sleep, and drink boxing. they literally go to bootcamps.

and the fact that they're not allowed to compete in the Pro's makes them take the ameteurs super serious.

it's a shame because they are some of the most talented boxers on the planet.

They dont have the pros so they have basically broken down the amateur format and built methods to win in an amateur contest. As mentioned above as well they have boot camps that start from an early age.

I really doubt any other country is as serious about amateur boxing as Cuba.

I don't think they are as dominate anymore or they haven't been in the most recent Olympic's or World Championships, they are still the top amateur nation although Ukraine could be said to be currently doing better.

They do so well though as boxing is a big sport in Cuba and they don't ha e to worry so much about there best fighters turning pro.

Also from watching the Sons of Cuba documentary (highly recommend) you can see from the training and lifestyle of the young fighters why they produce such talented fighters.

Seriously, think how many Cuban world champions there'd be if they were allowed to go pro.

    are you ******ed?

how many gold medals would ali, DLH, foreman, frazier, whitaker, taylor, ect ect have if all they did was fight in the amateurs? have you not read any of the responses to your first question? at some point you have a guy like rigondeaux who is 26,27, 28 years old fighting 18 year old kids. the cuban that won the gold in 2004 vs khan did so to a 17 year old khan.
use some common sense. the majority of the ones that make it to the states have become lazy and their training suffers and you have seen the results. there is nothing else to do in cuba when you are a boxer but box. 24/7

  10. The sports academies are set up to find and enrich talent in state run schools.they live at the academies. train amateurs like pros from kids to retirement age. Full staff of sports doctors and scientists and great study into the sport

Ive heard they call it, Soviet style workrate with Latin passion.

casamayor was olympic champ at 18, Rigo has been dominating since before 20 yrs old.
casmayor despite his reputation of having fun and party was champ and remained top ranked while active, never failed a weigh in and only got clearly beaten after getting old.
