Do boxing fans lose interest due to subpar skills from boxer today?

I often hear hardcore boxing fans say how more skillful boxers were in the past then today. Just wondering if we enjoy watching skill display in the ring? If we do then probably many boxing fans have leave because to them it would be like watching the minor leagues of other sports. I personal find today boxers very skillful and exciting to watch, but I might leave the sport if they start to resemble MMA fighters.

To an extent, perhaps. But I feel a boxing fan who truly values skills will find ways to appreciate overlooked or under appreciated tools fighters on all levels use. Rios-Antillon, to the casual observer, was just two guys brawling. Which isn't entirely wrong, they were certainly at war, but each guy does things very well on the inside and elsewhere within their stylistic framework. Sometimes, it's the little things.

Nostalgia + the US boxers being on the decline.

I don't think so, there are plenty of skilled boxers to watch these days. The top skilled boxer's in this era are probably just as skilled as any other era.

I think boxing needs more action fights if anything.

Yeah, I don't like to watch a match were both fighters are getting tagged all the time. It's not that they have no skill, just that they rather not apply it. Like a basketball game where they run up and down the court with no resistance.

It depends; Duran-Leonard tagged each other plenty showing heaps of ATG skill. But I feel you, needless punishment is sometimes a turnoff for me.

you have the good the bad and the ugly in boxing right now, or anytime in the history sport. early 2000's were some beast, 90's hw's were all beast even the gatekeepers, 80's ww mw were filled with monsters. you can go back further then that but i appreciate todays old vets mayweather and jmm. new champs like canelo and ward. and all in between if you real hardcore boxing you will always watch it. take the good with the good and the bad with the bad, but if you love you will always watch it, i know i would.

Thank God for boxers like Ward ..The lack of seasoned fighters is truly lacking these days ...Most of the great trainers are long and gone and thats why the sport has suffered tremendously !

I think it's more the vast decline of the Heavyweight division, the blatant corruption in the sport, and the two biggest name boxers in the world not facing each other.

Nah, it wasn't. But Duran ate a good number of shots and the two gave us some great exchanges.

    Agreed :good
