You can't see a Bellew thread on this forum without someone saying "Ass Kisser" and "Should move up to Cruiserweight"

I tend to disagree with the idea that Bellew could be a force at Cruiser. I would use fighters like Kelly Pavlik as an example of a fighter who used his size and power to dominate fighters in the lowest possible weight class he can make. When he moved up, his size and strentgh became less of an asset and his actual boxing skill was put to the test.

The fighters that traditionally has success moving up in weight are the fast/slick fighters. There strentghs are only enhanced by the move up as they are fighting smaller guys who are slower.

If you look at Bellews physqiue, compared to the guys at Cruiserweight

I am not talking about six packs here. Just look at the natural size of these guys in the back, arms, legs.

If you look back at Photos of Bellew when he was an amateur he doesnt look big he looks tubby.

Because of the 25lbs weight gap Bellew goes from being the beast to the smaller guy.

Talking about 'traditionally' doesn't hold much weight when you have little clue about boxing history.

I see your point though. I think Bellew would be stronger but he'd have to outbox bigger, stronger guys.

    Good theory IMO.

  3. His power should increase as would his punch resistance

He has better boxing skills than most of the top guys @ CW

    Interesting point.

I can see both sides of the argument.

On the one hand, he'd likely have more confidence in his ability to take a shot, and thus not be as negative at times, and perhaps punch *harder* too.

    * Whether those harder punches has more of an effect on the bigger opponents remains to be seen.

On the other he'll have to face bigger and stronger opponents.

175 at the minute isn't a particularly strong division, and there's an opportunity there for him to do something, though that's also the case at cruiser, even if he wouldn't fill right up to the 200 limit.

I just picture him in with someone limited, with average stamina and an average chin like Huck and think it'd be a one-sided execution, that's all.

wont be long till his fan boys start claiming he beats a young evander in a fantasy match up, when in reality arsalan would give him all he could handle and Lebedev would leave him in the ICU.

I think Tony walks around at about 190, most of the top cruisers are basically small heavyweights who can boil down to the cruiserweight limit.

As long as he can make the weight without too many difficulties Bellew should stay at LHW for the forseeable future imo

Sorry, haven't been following things here, but is there something wrong with him staying at LHW?

perhaps the reason that Bellew doesn't looks bigger is because he has to eat into his muscle storage in order to make 175.

I agree, if he wants any success then he needs to stay at 175. I wouldn't give him much hope at Cruiserweight at all, the size difference between those two divisions is monumental.

In agree Rob and for the reasons you've mentioned.

"Bellew should move to cruiserweight" is another "(Insert name of boxer) should move to America for better sparing".
